Chapter 1 - The Humiliation

My daughter’s presents were the smallest pile under my mother’s massive Christmas tree.

They were tucked so low that the expensive pine needles almost swallowed the cheap ribbon.

There was a soft book from my sister.

There was a little stuffed bunny from my aunt.

There were two uneven boxes I wrapped after midnight while my eight-month-old finally slept in my tiny apartment.

I carried Lily into that dining room hoping for a quiet, peaceful holiday evening.

I just wanted one night where my family pretended to love us.

Instead, my mother waited until all twenty guests were seated and quiet.

She raised her crystal wine glass and pointed directly at my baby.

She announced that it was a tragedy I had brought a fatherless mistake into a respectable home.

The entire table went dead silent as my mother laughed at her own cruel joke.

My uncle chuckled nervously while my sister looked down at her plate.

No one defended me.

No one ever defended me.

I stood up slowly, holding Lily tightly against my chest to shield her from their stares.

I walked over to the tree and gathered those four tiny gifts into my bag.

I looked my mother dead in the eye with a calmness that surprised even me.

"This is her last Christmas here," I told her clearly.

I turned around and walked out the front door into the freezing snow.

I expected to feel heartbroken, but I only felt absolute rage.

I strapped my crying daughter into her car seat and started the engine.

My phone immediately buzzed in the cup holder.

It was a text message from my mother.

She said I was completely unhinged and emotionally unstable.

She also said I should enjoy my night alone.

Because tomorrow morning, she was taking my baby away.

She attached a photo of a legal document filed with the family court.

It was an emergency petition for full custody, claiming I was an unfit mother.
