Chapter 8 - The Corrupt Badge

Detective Miller kicked Officer Davis's weapon far across the room and out of reach.
"You really made a mess of things today, Davis," Miller said, shaking his head in mock disappointment.
Dad scrambled to his feet and brushed the dust off his flannel shirt.
"It took you long enough to get up here, Miller," Dad complained arrogantly.
Miller ignored him and pointed his gun directly at my chest.
"Hand over the insurance documents you stole from the house, Sarah," Miller demanded coldly.
I clutched the folded papers tightly inside my jacket, knowing they were my only leverage.
"If you kill me, the FBI will eventually find out about your massive fraud ring," I bluffed desperately.
Miller laughed and cocked the hammer of his weapon.
"I will just write in my report that a rogue officer and a deranged sister shot each other in a tragic murder-suicide," he sneered.
Dad picked up the discarded syringe from the floor and walked back toward Clara's bed.
"Finish the job quickly, we need to clear out before the hospital administration arrives," Miller ordered my father.
I looked down at Officer Davis, who was bleeding heavily on the floor but still conscious.
Davis gave me a subtle, almost imperceptible nod toward the wall behind the hospital bed.
I realized he was looking directly at the red emergency code button mounted above Clara's head.
I had to distract them long enough to hit that button and flood the room with medical staff.
"Evelyn is going to betray you both," I shouted, drawing their attention away from the bed.
"She took all the original documents and she is leaving the country tonight," I lied flawlessly.
Dad stopped with the needle hovering just inches from Clara's IV port.
"What are you talking about?" Dad demanded, his greedy paranoia immediately taking over.
"She told us she was cutting you out of the Blackwood Holdings account entirely," I added, twisting the knife.
Miller looked at my father with sudden, deep suspicion.
"Did you try to cut me out of my percentage?" Miller asked Dad, momentarily lowering his weapon.

I did not wait for his answer.
I dove across the bed and slammed my fist directly onto the red emergency button.
