Chapter 6 - The Inside Man

Evelyn vaulted gracefully through the shattered patio window and disappeared into the snowy darkness.

"We cannot chase her, we are completely out of time!" I yelled to Officer Davis.

We grabbed the scattered insurance documents from the floor and sprinted out the back door.

We could hear Detective Miller shouting orders to his men in the front yard.

We ran through the deep snow, slipping and sliding until we reached Davis's hidden car.

"Miller knows we are onto him, which means he is going to accelerate the timeline," Davis warned as he started the engine.

We tore out of the neighborhood and headed directly toward the city hospital.

My hands shook violently as I read through the stolen insurance policies in the passenger seat.

The paperwork clearly showed Detective Miller's signature listed as the official legal witness for the fraudulent trust changes.

"We have the undeniable proof to put them all in federal prison," I said, holding up the papers.

But the evidence would mean absolutely nothing if Clara did not survive the night.

We arrived at the hospital parking garage and abandoned the car near the service elevators.

"Miller has uniforms guarding the main ICU doors, so we have to go through the basement ventilation," Davis instructed.

We navigated the dark, creepy hospital basement and found a maintenance stairwell that led up to the critical care floor.

We crept silently up five flights of concrete stairs, our lungs burning with exertion.

Davis slowly pushed the heavy fire door open just a crack to scan the brightly lit hallway.

Two police officers were standing directly in front of Clara's private room.

"I am going to create a distraction, and you need to slip inside the room," Davis whispered.

He pulled the fire alarm on the stairwell wall, sending a deafening siren echoing across the hospital floor.

The two guards immediately abandoned their post and ran toward the stairwell to investigate the alarm.

I sprinted down the hallway and slipped quietly into Clara's room, locking the door behind me.

The room was incredibly dark, illuminated only by the rhythmic flashing of the heart monitor.

I heard a soft rustling sound coming from the far side of the hospital bed.

Dad was standing over Clara, holding a large medical syringe directly above her intravenous line.
