Chapter 5 - The Dead Woman

I stared at the woman's face, completely paralyzed by impossible shock.

It was my mother, Evelyn.

She had supposedly died in a horrific car crash ten years ago when Clara and I were just children.

"Hello, Sarah," she said smoothly, her voice completely unchanged by a decade of presumed death.

"You are supposed to be dead," I whispered, stepping backward into Officer Davis.

Davis raised his service weapon and aimed it directly at my mother's chest.

"Put your hands in the air right now," Davis commanded firmly.

My mother laughed, a dry and hollow sound that sent chills down my spine.

"Your father is a greedy fool who tried to cut me out of my own plan," she explained casually.

She revealed that she had faked her death a decade ago to escape massive gambling debts.

Dad had helped her hide, and they had spent years planning to cash in on Clara's medical trust.

"Blackwood Holdings belongs to me, and I came to collect my original documents," Evelyn admitted.

She held up a thick stack of life insurance policies from the open lockbox.

"He took out policies on both of you girls, but he got impatient and ruined the timeline," she sneered.

She was angry that Dad had drawn police attention by locking Clara in the garage.

"You are a monster," I cried, realizing neither of my parents possessed a single shred of humanity.

"I am simply a realist," Evelyn replied, pulling a small silver handgun from her coat pocket.

Before she could raise the weapon, Davis fired a single warning shot into the ceiling.

Evelyn flinched, dropping the insurance documents onto the hardwood floor.

"If you shoot me, the corrupt detectives on my payroll will hunt you down forever," she threatened.

"Detective Miller is working for you," I realized aloud, piecing the horrible puzzle together.

Evelyn smiled wickedly and nodded her head.

"Miller is making sure your father has a clear path to Clara's hospital bed tonight," she confirmed.

She told us that Dad was going to inject Clara with a lethal dose of untraceable potassium.

Suddenly, the wail of police sirens erupted from the front street.

"Miller just arrived to clean up the mess," Evelyn laughed, stepping backward toward the broken window.
