Chapter 3 - The Beneficiary

I stared blindly at the glowing phone screen as my father was shoved roughly against the hospital wall.

Why is my husband calling you at two in the morning, I demanded incredibly loudly.

My father stubbornly refused to look at me, keeping his eyes firmly fixed on the polished linoleum floor.

The detective aggressively snatched the phone from his hand and answered the call on speakerphone.

Is the job completely done yet, Mark's voice echoed through the quiet hospital corridor.

The detective quickly muted the microphone so Mark could not hear our end of the open line.

Did she finally sign the new policy before she passed out, Mark asked with terrifying impatience.

A massive wave of pure nausea washed violently over my entire body.

My own husband was heavily involved in the twisted plot to torture my defenseless sister.

The detective abruptly ended the call and placed the phone securely inside a plastic evidence bag.

I need you to step entirely away from your father right now, she safely instructed me.

I stumbled backward blindly, feeling as though the walls of the hospital were rapidly closing in on me.

My father was officially escorted out of the building by two heavily armed uniform officers.

I sat heavily in the waiting room chair, completely unable to process the massive personal betrayal.

Mark and I had been happily married for five seemingly perfect years.

He had always acted incredibly supportive regarding the heavy burden of my sister's medical needs.

I painfully realized now that his constant offers to review her complex financial paperwork were not acts of kindness.

They were highly calculated reconnaissance missions designed to perfectly map out her vast wealth.

A doctor wearing green surgical scrubs suddenly pushed urgently through the double doors of the intensive care unit.

He walked directly toward me with a very grim, serious expression on his tired face.

Your sister is physically stabilized, but she is currently slipping in and out of consciousness, the doctor explained quietly.

Can I please see her for just one incredibly brief minute, I practically begged him.

He nodded very reluctantly and led me cautiously down a maze of stark white hallways.

My sister looked incredibly fragile hooked up to the numerous humming life-support machines.

I approached the side of her bed and gently took her badly bruised hand in mine.

Her heavy eyelids fluttered open wildly, and she looked at me with pure, unadulterated terror in her eyes.

I am so incredibly sorry I did not get there sooner, I whispered softly through my falling tears.

She squeezed my fingers tightly with a shocking amount of hidden, desperate strength.

They did not just change the beneficiary name to steal my money, she rasped weakly through her clear oxygen mask.

I leaned in much closer, desperate to hear absolutely every single word she was trying to say.

I already know Dad and Mark are actively trying to take the trust fund, I assured her calmly.

She shook her head violently from side to side, causing the heart monitor to beep rapidly in protest.

You do not truly understand what they actually did on that tablet tonight, she choked out painfully.

They did not put Mark's name on the new lucrative life insurance policy.

They legally put your name on the policy, and they are going to ensure it looks like you tried to murder me.
