Chapter 2 - The Device Number

The highly trained paramedics instantly took over the chaotic scene in the freezing garage.
One paramedic quickly fitted a specialized oxygen mask securely over my sister's pale face.
The other professional checked her dangerously low pulse and called out medical numbers I did not fully understand.
My father stayed stubbornly in the kitchen doorway with his arms tightly folded across his chest.
He repeated endlessly that she had irrationally locked herself inside the room.
He claimed she was deeply confused and that the severe bruises came from a clumsy fall.
The police officer looked closely at the shattered brass padlock resting on the concrete floor.
Then he looked directly at my angry father.
Finally, the officer stared intensely at the distinctive key ring clipped to my father's leather belt.
Nobody in the room had to say a single word.
The ambulance ride to the emergency room felt like it took hours instead of minutes.
At the hospital, the harsh fluorescent lights made every single bruise on my sister's body look incredibly sharp.
A specialized nurse carefully photographed all of my sister's horrific injuries for the official medical chart.
A paramedic officially recorded the freezing garage temperature and the exact time the heavy door had been opened.
The officer carefully bagged the torn winter coat for vital forensic evidence.
He wrote down the serial number from her missing portable oxygen unit after I frantically found the warranty card in her purse.
My father sat entirely alone in a plastic chair across the sterile hallway, bouncing one knee in a rapid rhythm.
He kept checking his expensive smartphone every few seconds with obvious anxiety.
When a female detective finally arrived in a sharp gray suit, my father eagerly told his fabricated story again.
This time, his vicious lies sounded significantly smoother and well-rehearsed.
He confidently claimed my sister was incredibly lazy and constantly exaggerated her chronic symptoms for financial attention.
He casually suggested she had probably changed her own banking information in a state of medical confusion and forgotten about it.
He even explicitly stated he had disabled the garage heater solely because the electric bill was getting far too high.
The highly experienced detective did not argue with him or raise her voice at all.
She calmly asked her uniformed partner to pull the digital utility account records.
The official smart-meter log explicitly showed the garage circuit had been switched off remotely.
Then the detective asked the bank for the exact digital timestamp on the recent beneficiary change connected to my sister’s massive trust account.
The two illegal digital actions were executed exactly two minutes apart.
They both originated directly from the exact same home Wi-Fi network.
They were electronically traced to the exact same registered electronic tablet.
My father laughed nervously once and reached for his phone, acting as if he planned to call someone who could explain all of the technical errors away.
The detective loudly read the tablet’s unique device number aloud for the entire hallway to hear.
My father’s hand completely stopped halfway to his shirt pocket.
He knew he was firmly caught in an undeniable digital trap.
The detective pulled a pair of silver handcuffs from her belt and ordered my father to stand up immediately.
As the heavy metal clicked around his wrists, his phone suddenly rang at maximum volume.

The glowing screen clearly displayed a name that made my heart completely stop beating.
The incoming caller was unmistakably listed as my husband, Mark.
