Chapter 5 - The Underground Maze

The powerful concussive blast threw both men aggressively down the steep concrete stairs. Noah tumbled violently in the dark, scraping his knees against the rough stone walls. He hit the bottom floor hard, gasping desperately for breath as ancient dust filled his lungs. Elias landed surprisingly gracefully on his feet, his silver revolver still gripped tightly. The old man reached deep into his pocket and pulled out a high-powered tactical flashlight. The bright beam illuminated a vast, forgotten network of abandoned subway tunnels. "Move quickly, because they will be coming down here very soon," Elias instructed sharply. Noah scrambled to his feet, his racing mind struggling to process the absolute chaos. They ran endlessly through the damp, echoing tunnels for what felt like hours. Noah's leg muscles ached fiercely, but the terrifying fear of the mercenaries kept him moving. "Who are you really?" Noah finally asked between heavy, exhausted pants. "I am the man who built this city's criminal empire, and the man trying to tear it down," Elias answered. He stopped walking suddenly, holding up a weathered hand to signal for absolute silence. Heavy footsteps splashed ominously in the stagnant black water just up ahead. Noah's blood ran completely cold as bright red laser sights cut through the tunnel's darkness. They were completely surrounded by heavily armed cartel enforcers emerging from the shadows. A tall, imposing man in an impeccably tailored suit stepped forward into the flashlight beam. "Hello, Elias, it has been a very long time," the well-dressed man sneered cruelly. Noah recognized the man instantly, staring at his familiar face with absolute, crushing horror. The man leading the deadly cartel death squad was Noah's own diner manager, Gary.
