Chapter 6 - The Surgery

The cell phone vibrated violently against Sadi's palm.
She rejected the call and threw the device onto a nearby medical tray.
This was not the time to deal with the loan sharks who had ruined her life.
"Wash your hands with the iodine solution," Dante ordered, his voice growing weaker.
Sadi rushed to the steel sink and scrubbed her hands until the skin burned red.
She pulled on a pair of sterile surgical gloves and approached the operating table.
"I am going to have to administer a local anesthetic," Sadi warned, picking up a syringe.
"No," Dante refused sharply.
"I need to stay awake in case they track the vehicle and find us."
Sadi stared at him in utter disbelief.
"You will go into shock from the sheer pain," she argued.
Dante reached out and grabbed her wrist with surprising strength.
"Cut it out," he demanded fiercely.
Sadi swallowed hard and picked up a silver scalpel.
She made a precise incision just above the entry wound, ignoring the blood flowing over her gloves.
Dante let out a low, guttural growl of absolute agony, but he did not move a single inch.
Sadi grabbed a pair of forceps and dug deeply into the torn muscle tissue.
Her metal instrument finally clinked against something hard and solid.
She clamped the forceps tight and slowly pulled the lead bullet out of his flesh.
She dropped the bloody projectile into a metal surgical bowl with a loud clatter.
Sadi quickly packed the wound with sterile gauze and began stitching the torn skin back together.
Dante breathed a heavy sigh of relief as the worst of the pain finally subsided.
"You did beautifully," Dante whispered, his eyes filled with a strange, genuine admiration.
Sadi ignored the compliment and walked over to the sink to wash the blood from her hands.
She glanced down at the metal surgical bowl containing the extracted bullet.
Something caught her eye beneath the red stains.
She picked up the bullet and wiped it clean with a fresh towel.
A tiny, intricate engraving of a flying falcon was stamped directly into the base of the lead.
It was the exact same crest that her father's loan sharks wore tattooed on their necks.

Sadi turned around slowly to face the mafia boss resting on the table.
"Why did the Falcone family shoot you with a custom bullet?" she asked coldly.
