Chapter 9 - The Rescue

Daniel gasped loudly, dropping the pistol as a bright blossom of blood appeared on his right shoulder.
He collapsed onto the concrete floor next to Vance, writhing in sudden, excruciating pain.
I turned my head weakly toward the massive hole where the panic room door used to be.
Amanda was standing in the doorway, holding a smoking revolver she had taken from Daniel’s safe.
Her hands were shaking uncontrollably, and tears were streaming rapidly down her pale face.
“I warned you not to hurt that little boy, Daniel,” she screamed with furious conviction.
Behind her, the blaring sound of police sirens completely surrounded the massive warehouse.
Amanda had escaped the house and led the state police and federal tactical units directly to our exact location.
Dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers poured into the building, their flashlights cutting through the thick smoke.
They immediately secured the area, placing heavy iron handcuffs on a bleeding Daniel and an unconscious Vance.
Paramedics rushed into the panic room, gently lifting Noah onto a stretcher and wrapping him in a warm shock blanket.
A medic knelt beside me, applying a pressure bandage to the severe head wound Daniel had given me.
I refused the stretcher, leaning heavily on my cane as I limped slowly out of the destroyed building.
Noah reached out for me from the back of the ambulance, and I held his small, trembling hand tightly.
Amanda walked over to the ambulance, flanked by two federal agents who were taking her official statement.
She looked at me with deep, profound regret.
“I am so sorry I didn't see the monster he truly was until today,” she whispered softly.
I nodded respectfully, thanking her for finding the immense bravery to pull the trigger and save our lives.
The lead FBI agent approached me, removing his tactical helmet and offering a formal salute.
“Sergeant Carter, your ex-husband and his associates are facing federal terrorism and kidnapping charges.”
The agent confirmed that Daniel would never see the outside of a maximum-security prison cell ever again.

I pulled Noah into a tight, unbreakable embrace as the ambulance doors closed, carrying us safely away from the nightmare.
The long, terrifying night was finally over, and the warm morning sun began to peek over the Charlotte skyline.
