Chapter 2 - The Federal Ambush

The cold steel of the handcuffs bit painfully into my wrists.
Two federal agents dragged me out of the courtroom while the gallery watched in stunned silence.
Daniel actually smiled, instantly realizing this sudden twist of fate would grant him automatic custody of Noah.
I fought against the agents, screaming for Linda to call my military commanding officer immediately.
They shoved me into the back of an armored black SUV waiting on the courthouse steps.
The man in the gray suit climbed into the front seat and signaled the driver to accelerate.
I demanded to know what I was being charged with, but the men remained completely silent.
We drove for over an hour, leaving the busy streets of Raleigh for the desolate country roads.
I noticed we were not heading toward the federal building or any known police precinct.
The SUV turned down a heavily wooded dirt path and parked inside an abandoned logging camp.
The man in the gray suit stepped out and opened my door.
He reached into his pocket and unlocked my handcuffs with a small silver key.
I rubbed my bruised wrists, my combat instincts analyzing every possible escape route.
“You are not federal agents,” I said quietly.
The man smirked and tossed his fake badge into the mud.
“No, we are not, Sergeant Carter.”
He pulled a silenced pistol from his jacket and aimed it directly at my chest.
“Daniel owes my employer a very large sum of money.”
I stared at the gun, my mind racing to connect my ex-husband’s debts to this elaborate kidnapping.
“My employer knew Daniel would lose the custody battle once your classified file was unsealed.”
The man stepped closer, the cold barrel of the weapon pressing against my collarbone.
“Daniel promised us that if he got the boy, he could force you to hand over your military retirement trust.”
I felt sick to my stomach.
Daniel had sold our ten-year-old son to an underground crime syndicate to pay off his gambling debts.
“Since Daniel failed in court, we are skipping the legal route.”
The man pulled a burner phone from his pocket and showed me a live video feed.

The screen showed Noah sitting in the back of a strange van, crying silently.
“You have exactly two hours to transfer the funds, or your son is going to disappear forever.”
