Chapter 8 - The Fire and the Fury

The red flare dropped in slow motion toward the gasoline-soaked concrete floor.

I did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.

I fired a single, precise shot that shattered Vance’s shoulder, spinning him violently backward against the wall.

Before the flare could touch the liquid, I dove across the slippery floor and caught the burning stick in my left hand.

The hot sparks burned my palm severely, but I quickly extinguished the flame against the dry wall.

Vance groaned in agonizing pain, clutching his bleeding shoulder as he slumped to the floor.

I rushed over to Noah, pulling my combat knife to slice through the thick plastic zip-ties binding his wrists.

My son threw his arms around my neck, sobbing uncontrollably into my shoulder.

“I’ve got you, baby, you are completely safe now,” I whispered fiercely.

I helped Noah to his feet, shielding his small body with my own as we stepped out of the fumes.

I walked over to where Vance was bleeding on the floor and kicked his weapon far out of reach.

I aimed my pistol at his head, fully prepared to end the monster who tried to burn my child alive.

Suddenly, a heavy, blunt object smashed violently into the back of my skull.

My vision exploded into a blinding flash of white light, and my knees buckled instantly.

I collapsed onto the hard concrete, the pistol slipping from my numb fingers.

I blinked away the blood pouring into my eyes, struggling desperately to stay conscious.

Standing over me with a heavy steel wrench was Daniel.

He looked completely unhinged, his expensive suit ruined and his eyes wide with desperate madness.

“I can’t let you leave here, Emma,” Daniel stammered, his hands shaking violently.

He picked up my fallen pistol and aimed it directly at my chest.

“If the police find out I helped Vance, I’ll spend the rest of my life in federal prison.”

Noah screamed for his father to stop, crying hysterically from the corner of the room.

Daniel refused to look at our son, keeping his terrifying focus entirely on me.

“I’ll tell the judge that Vance killed you, and I arrived just in time to heroically save our boy.”

He cocked the hammer of the pistol, preparing to pull the trigger.

“Say goodbye, Emma.”

A deafening gunshot echoed through the entire warehouse, but it did not come from Daniel’s weapon.
