Chapter 9 - The Reckoning
While I was resting in the maternity ward, swaddled in absolute bliss with my newborn son, Leo, the outside world was systematically dismantling Marcus Thorne.
The fallout from his arrest was immediate and catastrophic. Because the embezzlement was tied to his mistress, Chloe was brought in for questioning as a co-conspirator. Frightened and completely out of her depth, Chloe immediately turned on him. She gave the police every text message, every bank slip, and every recorded conversation where Marcus had detailed their plan to steal from me.
She thought cooperating would save her. It didn't. She was charged with receiving stolen property and conspiracy to commit fraud.
Two days after Leo was born, my mother came to visit the hospital. She looked older, heavier with the weight of her youngest daughter's disgrace.
"Chloe called from the county jail," Mom said quietly, watching Leo sleep in my arms. "She begged me to post her bail. It’s ten thousand dollars."
I didn't look up from Leo's face. "What did you tell her?"
"I told her I didn't have the money," Mom sighed, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I told her she needs to face the consequences of destroying her own family. I'm so sorry, Eleanor. I'm so sorry I didn't see who she really was."
"It's over, Mom," I said softly, reaching out to squeeze her hand. "We don't have to talk about her ever again. She is no longer part of this family."
Marcus didn't fare any better. His mother, Vivian, tried to hire a high-powered defense attorney to bail him out, but the scandal had hit the local news. The headline 'Husband Arrested for Fraud After Faking Paternity and Embezzling from Pregnant Wife' was too toxic. The attorney dropped him after the initial arraignment.
Marcus was denied bail as a flight risk. He was going to sit in a concrete cell until his trial. The man who had demanded a son and a fortune was left with absolutely nothing.

The divorce was finalized rapidly. With Marcus incarcerated and facing felony charges, the judge granted me 100% of the assets, the house, the business, and full, unshared legal and physical custody of Leo. Marcus was legally stripped of his parental rights due to his criminal actions against the mother.
The board was swept clean.
