Chapter 3 - The Empty Wallets

Tuesday morning arrived with a torrential downpour, matching the absolute storm I was about to unleash on my soon-to-be ex-husband.

I was at the hospital for a routine fetal monitoring appointment, surrounded by the comforting hum of medical machines, when my phone rang. It was Marcus. I let it go to voicemail, but less than a minute later, an unknown number popped up. Knowing what was coming, I answered and put it on speakerphone.

"Eleanor! What the hell did you do?" Marcus's voice was frantic, bordering on hysterical. Background noise indicated he was at a coffee shop or a restaurant. "My card just got declined for a three-dollar coffee! I checked the app, and I’m locked out of everything. The joint accounts, my personal checking, even the company credit card!"

"You're not an authorized user on the company card anymore, Marcus," I said smoothly, leaning back against the hospital pillows. "And the joint accounts are frozen pending a forensic audit during the divorce proceedings. My lawyer advised it, considering the eighty grand you embezzled to play sugar daddy to my sister."

Silence hung heavily on the line, followed by a sharp intake of breath. He hadn't expected me to find the money so fast.

"Eleanor, listen to me, that's a misunderstanding—"

"Save it for the judge, Marcus," I interrupted. "You have thirty days to find your own attorney. Oh, and good luck paying a retainer with no access to cash. Maybe Chloe can chip in. Or wait, didn't Wyatt kick her out of his house last night?"

I hung up and blocked the number.

Amina walked into the room, holding my chart and grinning. "Heartbeat is strong. Blood pressure is surprisingly excellent for a woman currently dismantling a cheating husband's entire life."

"I'm nesting," I joked dryly, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. "Some women organize closets. I organize financial ruin. Speaking of which, have you heard from Vivian?"

Amina rolled her eyes. "She called the clinic twice yesterday, demanding your medical records, claiming you tricked her son into raising a 'fake baby.' I reminded her of HIPAA laws and told her the next time she calls, I'm pressing harassment charges."

"She won't stop there," I sighed, pulling on my coat. "Vivian has always believed she pulls the strings. She’s going to try and come for me."

"Let her try," Amina said, squeezing my shoulder. "You're holding all the cards."
