Chapter 1 - The Mechanic

The man in the mud-spattered work coat was breathing hard, his chest heaving as if he had sprinted all the way from the street. The baby shower, already paralyzed by Amina’s medical revelation, descended into a shocked, breathless vacuum.

"You," the man growled, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble that rattled the crystal on the gift tables. He ignored the fifty stunned guests. He ignored my mother, who was clutching her pearls in genuine horror. His eyes were locked entirely on my sister, Chloe.

Chloe’s fake, triumphant glow vanished, replaced by the stark, chalky pallor of a cornered animal. She dropped Marcus’s arm as if it had suddenly caught fire.

"Wyatt," she stammered, taking a step backward. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be in Dallas."

"My flight got canceled. Figured I'd surprise my fiancée," Wyatt said. The word fiancée echoed off the vaulted ceilings. He stepped further into the living room, his heavy work boots leaving faint trails of dirt on the Persian rug. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a crumpled sonogram photo. "Imagine my surprise when I found this on the kitchen counter of our apartment. And then imagine how sick to my stomach I felt when your best friend told me you were here, crashing your sister's party to claim it belonged to another man."

Marcus, who had been staring at the floor in humiliation just moments before, snapped his head up. He looked from Chloe to Wyatt, his jaw slacking. "Fiancée? You told me you lived alone. You told me you were barely scraping by."

"She’s been living in my house for two years, buddy," Wyatt sneered, glaring at my husband with a mixture of pity and disgust. "And she’s three months pregnant with my kid. We went to the clinic together last week."

The collective gasp from the room was louder this time. Marcus’s mother, Vivian, let out a high-pitched sound akin to a deflating balloon and collapsed into a nearby armchair, fanning her face frantically.

"Is this true, Chloe?" Marcus demanded, his voice cracking. The arrogance that had fueled his grand betrayal was entirely gone, replaced by the pathetic whine of a man realizing he was the punchline of a very cruel joke.

"Marcus, don't listen to him! He's crazy, he's just an obsessive ex!" Chloe shrieked, tears of genuine panic finally welling in her eyes.

"Save it," I said. My voice was eerily calm, cutting through the hysteria like a cold blade. I placed my hands on my swollen belly, feeling a sudden, protective surge of adrenaline. I looked at the man I had married, the man who had plotted to humiliate me in front of everyone I loved. "You wanted to trade me in for a younger, more fertile model, Marcus? Congratulations. You threw away your marriage for a pathological liar who was playing you for a fool."

I turned to my mother, who was trembling by the balloon arch. "Mom. Call security. Get these people out of my house."
