Chapter 8 - The Morning Panic

The sun rose over Chicago, casting a cold, gray light through the kitchen windows.
I had not slept a single wink after Kayla’s terrifying confession.
I sat at the kitchen table with a mug of black coffee, watching the clock tick slowly toward eight in the morning.
Gloria was in the guest room, gently brushing Kayla’s hair and comforting our terrified granddaughter.
At exactly eight-fifteen, the aggressive pounding on the front door finally began.
It wasn't the rhythmic knock of a casual visitor.
It was the frantic, desperate hammering of someone who was completely out of time.
I walked to the entryway and unbolted the heavy wooden door.
Kevin and Tiffany nearly collapsed into the hallway, looking worse than I had ever seen them.
Kevin's expensive suit was wrinkled and stained with sweat, and his eyes were wild with genuine panic.
Tiffany’s perfect hair was a mess, and she wasn't wearing any of her arrogant jewelry.
"Dad, you have to help us right now," Kevin begged, entirely abandoning his usual pride.
"The investors walked out of Rosewood last night, and they are coming to collect the debt."
"I need you to unfreeze the trust and sign over the emergency retirement funds immediately."
I stood perfectly still, blocking their path into the rest of the house.
"You want me to hand over the last of my savings to cover the money you stole?" I asked coldly.
Tiffany stepped forward, her face twisted in an ugly mask of desperation.
"If you don't give us the money, Hank, we are going to jail."
"We used Gloria's restaurant to secure the first loan, and we defaulted three months ago."
Kevin grabbed my arm, his fingers digging painfully into my skin.
"They are coming to take the restaurant today, Dad."
"If you just give me the seventy-five thousand dollars, I can pay the penalty fee and buy us another month."
I casually reached into my back pocket and pulled out the thick manila folder containing the forged mortgage documents.
I threw the folder onto the floor right at Kevin's expensive leather shoes.
"I am not giving you a single dime to save you from the mess you created."
Tiffany’s eyes narrowed, and she aggressively pulled her cell phone out of her purse.
"Fine," Tiffany spat, her finger hovering over the screen.
"If you won't save us, I am calling the bank to officially report the default right now."
"We will take Gloria's precious restaurant down with us."

I smiled a cold, hard smile and crossed my arms over my chest.
"Go ahead and make the call, Tiffany."
