Chapter 6 - The Forged Signature

The phone line went dead, leaving me sitting in the silent office.

Tiffany’s venomous words echoed in my mind like a physical blow.

I immediately stood up, my knees aching, and rushed over to the heavy metal filing cabinet in the corner of the room.

I yanked the bottom drawer open and began frantically digging through years of meticulously organized family documents.

I pulled out the thick manila folder labeled with the name of Gloria's beloved restaurant.

I sifted through the old health inspection reports, the original property deed, and the tax records.

Everything seemed perfectly normal until I reached the very bottom of the stack.

There was a folded legal envelope from a commercial lending bank that I did not recognize.

I tore the envelope open and pulled out a twenty-page loan agreement.

My heart completely stopped as I read the bold print on the first page.

It was a commercial lien for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, secured entirely by the physical property of Gloria’s Corner.

I flipped rapidly to the final page where the authorization signatures were required.

There, written in blue ink, was Gloria’s familiar, flowing signature.

But I knew instantly that my wife had never signed this terrifying document.

The loop on the capital G was entirely wrong, and the pressure of the pen was far too heavy.

Kevin had not just borrowed money from my retirement accounts.

He had committed federal identity theft and forged his own mother’s signature to leverage her life's work.

If Tiffany stopped making the shadow payments, the bank would immediately foreclose on the restaurant Gloria had spent twenty years building.

They had completely trapped us in a web of financial ruin.

I slumped back into my desk chair, clutching the forged papers in my trembling hands.

I had thought draining the joint accounts would teach them a lesson in respect.

Instead, I had just inadvertently pulled the pin on a grenade that could leave my wife entirely bankrupt.

I needed to hire an aggressive defense lawyer, and I needed to do it before the banks opened on Monday morning.

I looked at the clock on the wall, noting it was already past ten at night.

Suddenly, a pair of bright headlights swept across my living room window.

I heard the loud crunch of tires pulling aggressively into our gravel driveway.

I quickly shoved the forged documents back into the folder and locked the desk drawer.

I grabbed the heavy metal flashlight I kept near the door and walked quietly toward the front entryway.

I expected to find Kevin and Tiffany standing on my porch, ready to scream and demand their money.

Instead, when I pulled open the heavy front door, I found someone entirely unexpected.

Standing alone on the porch, shivering in her expensive prom dress, was my granddaughter, Kayla.
