Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I ignored Kevin's cryptic warning and carefully placed the signed confession into my pocket.
I pointed my finger firmly toward the open front door.
"Get out of my house, and never come back," I demanded.
Tiffany looked like she wanted to scream, but she simply turned around and stormed out to the driveway.
Kevin lingered for a single second, looking toward the kitchen where his daughter was hiding.
Then he lowered his head in defeat and walked out the door.
I slammed the heavy wooden door shut and locked the deadbolt with a satisfying click.
I had done it.
I had legally secured the restaurant, protected our home, and banished the toxic leeches from our lives forever.
I walked back into the kitchen, feeling a profound, incredible sense of victory washing over me.
Gloria was pouring a fresh cup of coffee, and Kayla was smiling for the first time in days.
"Are they gone?" Gloria asked softly.
"They are gone for good," I promised her, kissing her gently on the forehead.
"The restaurant is entirely safe, and the bank debt will be cleared by noon."
We sat down at the table together, ready to finally enjoy the massive feast Gloria had prepared.
It was a beautiful, peaceful morning, and the heavy weight of the last ten years had finally lifted.
Then, the landline phone mounted on the kitchen wall began to ring.
I confidently walked over and picked up the receiver, expecting the bank confirming my wire transfer.
"Hank, this is an incredibly nice house you have here," a deep, unfamiliar voice said smoothly.
The absolute calm in the man's tone made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.
"Who is this?" I demanded, gripping the plastic phone tightly.
"I am the man your son borrowed a quarter of a million dollars from," the terrifying voice replied.
"I just watched Kevin drive away, leaving you holding the legal responsibility for his defaulted collateral."
I looked out the kitchen window and saw a massive black SUV parked silently across the street.
"You see, Hank, I don't operate a bank, and I don't care about the forged paperwork you just forced your son to sign."
May you like
"I am the head of the Chicago syndicate, and since you just legally assumed the debt for that restaurant, you now owe me the money."
"And if you don't bring me two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash by midnight, my men standing on your back porch are going to come inside and collect it."
