Chapter 1 - The Digital Purge

I sat in the cold, flickering glow of my laptop screen while Daniel stared at me in absolute, undeniable shock.
He could not comprehend that the woman who had spent years bending backward to accommodate his family was finally standing up straight.
I clicked the final confirmation button to officially terminate the expensive, unlimited data plans for both of his profoundly ungrateful teenagers.
He paced across the living room and told me I was completely overreacting to a simple broken wooden toy.
He promised he would buy Ethan a brand new, expensive drone tomorrow to easily replace the handmade airplane that Jason had maliciously destroyed.
He completely missed the point that genuine love, patience, and dedicated effort cannot simply be bought with a piece of plastic.
I closed my laptop and told him that Jason and Alyssa needed to find a new ride to their high school every single morning.
Daniel huffed loudly, grabbed his heavy car keys off the kitchen counter, and shook his head in absolute disgust.
He said he would just take his kids out for ice cream to avoid my unnecessary, dramatic emotional breakdown.
He walked out the front door and slammed it heavily behind him to proudly demonstrate his masculine authority in my house.
I walked into the kitchen and poured myself a tall glass of cold water to calm my rapidly racing heart.
I felt a massive weight lift off my shoulders as I finally accepted that I was no longer a victim in my own home.
Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed with an incredibly urgent text message from Daniel asking me to unlock my primary banking application.
He was currently stranded at the local gas station because his luxury credit card had just been viciously declined at the register.
I had already logged into the banking portal and permanently removed him as an authorized user on every single one of my accounts.
While he was standing at the counter arguing with the confused cashier, he happened to look out the large glass window.
He watched in absolute horror as his expensive luxury vehicle was aggressively hooked up to a dark, heavy-duty tow truck.
I had personally arranged for a private towing company to return the vehicle to my driveway because he no longer had my permission to drive my property.
Daniel sent me a frantic, angry message demanding to know how he was supposed to get his children back to our suburban house.
I quickly replied that they could walk the three miles home in the dark and think deeply about how they treat the people who provide for them.
I turned my phone on silent, poured out the rest of my water, and walked quietly down the hallway to check on my crying son.
Ethan was fast asleep in his bed with the broken, splintered pieces of his wooden airplane resting safely on his bedside table.
I gently kissed his forehead and silently vowed that nobody in this house would ever make my biological children feel small again.
I walked back downstairs to turn off the lights, feeling a profound sense of absolute control and unyielding power over my future.
Suddenly, the incredibly loud, terrifying sound of shattering glass violently echoed from the front living room.

I rushed toward the noise and found a massive, heavy concrete brick lying directly in the center of my expensive Persian rug.
Attached to the brick with thick black tape was a hastily handwritten note threatening me to leave the house immediately before things got significantly more dangerous.
