Chapter 7 - The Cornered Heir

Liam’s formal graduation suit was disheveled, his tie missing and his shirt soaked in sweat.
His eyes were completely bloodshot, staring at the glowing monitor broadcasting his horrific crime.
He raised the heavy fire axe, his breathing ragged and loud in the small soundproof room.
He screamed that Ethan had ruined his life.
He swung the axe at the computer console, smashing the monitor into a shower of sparks.
The video feed in the auditorium abruptly cut to static, but the damage was already done.
Everyone had seen enough to know the absolute truth.
Liam turned his furious gaze toward Ethan, lifting the axe higher.
He blamed Maya for ruining everything, screaming that she wouldn't just take the money and disappear.
I leaped in front of Ethan again, refusing to let another one of my children be taken from me.
I yelled at Liam that he was a coward and a murderer.
Liam sneered and swung the heavy axe toward my shoulder.
Ethan pushed me forcefully out of the way, dodging the deadly blade by mere fractions of an inch.
The axe embedded itself deeply into the wooden desk, getting stuck in the thick oak.
Liam struggled furiously to pull the weapon free, cursing loudly.
Ethan seized the opportunity, tackling his former best friend to the floor.
The boys rolled amidst the shattered glass and broken electronics, throwing desperate punches.
Liam was larger and stronger, fueled by the terrifying adrenaline of a cornered animal.
He managed to pin Ethan down, wrapping his hands tightly around my son's throat.
Ethan choked, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple as he clawed at Liam’s wrists.
I frantically searched the destroyed room for anything I could use as a weapon.
I saw the silver revolver the Mayor had dropped earlier, resting near the shattered window frame.
I scrambled across the glass, cutting my knees, and grabbed the heavy gun.
I pointed the shaking barrel directly at Liam's back.
I ordered him to let my son go, or I would shoot him dead.
Liam completely ignored me, his grip tightening ruthlessly around Ethan's neck.
I closed my eyes and pulled the trigger.

A loud, hollow click echoed in the small room.
The gun was completely out of bullets.
