Chapter 8 - The Interrogation

I listened to Dr. Harrison's trembling voice on the speakerphone.
The web of lies my son had spun was rapidly collapsing around him.
"Dr. Harrison, this is Mrs. Gable," I said clearly.
"Where are you right now?"
"I am locked in my clinic office," the doctor sobbed.
"Kenneth paid me fifty thousand dollars to sign that conservatorship form, but now he wants me to burn the evidence."
Abernathy leaned toward the microphone.
"Do exactly what the federal agents outside your door tell you to do, Doctor."
A loud crashing sound echoed through the phone, followed by shouting voices before the line went dead.
I looked at Abernathy, feeling a strange mix of triumph and absolute heartbreak.
"Turn the car around," I told the driver.
"Take us back to Gertrude's house."
We arrived just in time to see three black FBI SUVs sliding to a halt on the pristine suburban street.
Armed agents poured out of the vehicles, swarming Gertrude's front lawn.
I stepped out of my town car and walked calmly up the driveway.
Kenneth came running out the front door, his face pale with sheer terror.
"Mom, you have to tell them it is a misunderstanding!" he begged, grabbing my arm.
An agent immediately tackled Kenneth to the grass, pressing his face into the dirt.
Brenda ran out next, screaming hysterically as an agent placed her in handcuffs.
"I didn't know anything about the stolen money!" Brenda cried, trying to pull away.
"He told me his bonuses were just really big this year!"
Mason slowly walked out with his hands raised in the air, surrendering without a fight.
He looked at me with deep regret in his eyes, but it was far too late for apologies.
Gertrude stood in the doorway, clutching her pearls in absolute shock.
The lead FBI agent walked up to me and tipped his hat.
"Mrs. Gable, we have secured the suspects for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and judicial bribery."
Kenneth struggled against his handcuffs on the grass.
"You can't do this to your own family!" Kenneth screamed, spitting dirt from his mouth.
I walked over and looked down at the son who had tried to erase my existence.
"You stopped being my family the moment you sent that text message," I replied coldly.
The agent hoisted Kenneth to his feet and began reading him his Miranda rights.
As they dragged him toward the SUV, Mason suddenly yelled out.

"Wait!" Mason shouted, looking directly at the FBI agent.
"I want full immunity, and I will tell you where Aunt Gertrude hid the rest of the stolen company funds."
