Chapter 7 - The Christmas Eve Trap

I stared at the medical conservatorship document in Kenneth's hand.

He had actually done it.

He had fabricated a medical narrative to strip away my basic human rights, just to get his hands on my money.

"You belong in a nursing home, Mom," Kenneth said with a cruel, mocking smile.

"The judge reviewed your medical files and agreed that your 'paranoia' makes you a danger to yourself."

Brenda let out a small, satisfied laugh from the couch.

"We are just doing what is best for your health," she chimed in sweetly.

I looked at Abernathy, who remained perfectly calm beside me.

"Who signed the medical evaluation, Kenneth?" Abernathy asked smoothly.

"Dr. Harrison," Kenneth answered proudly.

"Her own primary care physician testified that her memory is completely gone."

I felt a sharp sting of betrayal, realizing my doctor of fifteen years had been bought.

Kenneth checked his watch.

"In fact, the medical transport van should be arriving at your house any minute to take you to the facility."

"If you resist, the police have authorization to use force."

They had planned this trap perfectly.

They wanted me locked inside a psychiatric ward where no one would ever listen to me.

"You are truly evil, Kenneth," I whispered.

"I am just a good son taking care of his sick mother," he sneered.

I turned on my heel and walked out of Gertrude's house, my heart pounding in my chest.

Abernathy followed me to the car, typing rapidly on his phone.

"We need to get to a federal judge right now," I told him as the driver sped away.

"We don't need a judge, Mrs. Gable," Abernathy replied, looking up from his screen.

"I anticipated Kenneth might try a dirty trick like this."

He turned his phone around to show me a live video feed from my home security cameras.

Two police cars were parked in my driveway, lights flashing.

But they were not local police.

They were federal agents wearing dark FBI windbreakers.

"What is going on?" I asked, completely confused.

"I forwarded Kenneth's corporate embezzlement files to the FBI three days ago," Abernathy explained.

"They aren't at your house for you."

"They are waiting for Kenneth."

Suddenly, Abernathy's phone buzzed with an incoming call from an unknown number.

He put it on speakerphone, and a frantic voice echoed through the car.

"Mr. Abernathy, this is Dr. Harrison," the voice pleaded, sounding terrified.

"Kenneth Gable just threatened to kill my family if I don't destroy the fake medical records immediately."
