Chapter 8 - The Final Betrayal

I spun around and slammed my fists against the heavy orange metal door.

Marcus stood on the other side, looking at me through the small, reinforced glass window.

He apologized quietly, claiming he really did want to take our father down.

He explained that our father was too powerful to defeat, and handing me over was the only way he could survive.

I screamed at him to open the door, but he simply turned around and walked away down the long corridor.

I was completely trapped inside the tiny, windowless metal box.

I looked down at the black ledger in my hands and realized it was the only leverage I had left.

I sat on the cold floor and frantically flipped through the pages, looking for anything that could save me.

The book was filled with names of judges, politicians, and police captains who were all on my father’s payroll.

I pulled out my cell phone, praying I had a signal inside the steel-reinforced building.

I had exactly one bar of service.

I did not call 911, because I knew the local dispatchers would just send my father’s men.

I opened my messaging app and attached a photo of the ledger’s most damning page.

I sent the photo directly to the trustworthy detective I had met at the hospital hours ago.

I typed out my exact location and begged him to bring federal agents, not local police.

Thirty agonizing minutes passed in total, suffocating silence.

Then I heard heavy footsteps echoing loudly outside my unit.

The lock clicked open, and the heavy door swung wide.

My father stood in the doorway, smiling warmly as he pointed his pistol directly at my face.

He told me it was finally time to end this miserable family drama once and for all.

He ordered me to step out of the unit and hand over the book.

I clutched the ledger tightly to my chest and refused to move a single inch.

My father sighed, aimed the gun at my knee, and pulled the heavy trigger.

A massive explosion of glass and concrete suddenly erupted from the ceiling above him.
