Chapter 6 - The Broken Bond

I stared at the piece of paper until the numbers blurred together.
The tragic accident that had shattered my entire world five years ago was a purchased assassination.
My father had paid someone to murder my wife because she had discovered his money laundering operation.
A primal, uncontrollable rage erupted from deep within my chest.
I ignored the two massive guards and charged directly at my father with my bare hands.
I slammed into his chest, driving him hard against the concrete ledge of the roof.
The silenced pistol flew out of his hand and skittered across the gravel.
The two guards rushed forward and began raining heavy punches down on my back and shoulders.
I refused to let go of my father's throat.
I squeezed with everything I had, watching the smug arrogance finally drain from his eyes.
Suddenly, a loud gunshot echoed across the rooftop, silencing the howling wind.
The two guards immediately stopped hitting me and stepped away.
I let go of my father and turned around, fully expecting to take a bullet to the chest.
Marcus was standing near the roof access door, holding a smoking pistol with a trembling hand.
He had not aimed at me.
One of my father’s massive guards collapsed to the ground, clutching a bleeding wound in his leg.
My father gasped for air and screamed at Marcus, demanding to know what he was doing.
Marcus looked at our father with absolute disgust.
He stated that covering up financial crimes was one thing, but he would never stand by and protect a murderer.
He aimed the gun directly at our father's chest and told him the empire was finally over.
Marcus looked at me and said we had exactly five minutes to get out of the city before the rest of the corrupt cops arrived.

I did not trust my brother for a single second.
But as I heard police sirens wailing in the distance, I knew he was my only chance to survive the night.
