Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

I walked into the secure psychiatric wing just as the morning nurses were changing shifts.

The social worker smiled warmly and unlocked the heavy door leading to Eli’s new room.

I stepped inside and found my son sitting up in bed, eating a cup of red gelatin.

His face was still badly bruised, but his eyes were bright and full of profound relief.

I sat on the edge of his bed, pulled him into a tight hug, and told him the bad men were completely gone.

Three months later, my father and brother were officially indicted on fifty counts of murder, corruption, and racketeering.

The black ledger had provided enough evidence to dismantle their entire criminal empire in a matter of weeks.

The corrupt police officers were fired and imprisoned, completely cleaning up the local precinct.

The court granted me full, permanent protective orders and officially cleared my name of all past psychiatric allegations.

Eli and I moved to a quiet, sunny neighborhood three towns away to start completely over.

His ribs had fully healed, and he was already making new friends on his middle school baseball team.

I finally felt like the devoted, protective father I had always fought so hard to become.

We were safe, we were happy, and the dark shadows of the past had finally been banished.

I stood on the front porch of our new house, enjoying the warm afternoon breeze as I checked the mailbox.

Tucked between two grocery store flyers was a plain white envelope with no return address.

I tore it open and found a freshly printed photograph of Eli playing baseball at his new school earlier that morning.

On the back of the photograph, a familiar handwriting had left a terrifyingly simple message.

"Did you really think the ledger you found was Volume One?"
