Chapter 7 - The Ransom

The silver-haired man’s words hung in the sterile air of the server room, heavy with toxic implication.
"What do you mean, if she hadn't been so greedy?" I demanded, stepping closer to the massive monitor.
Emma grabbed my arm, trying to pull me back into the shadows of the server racks.
"Don't listen to him, Emily, he manipulates everything," Emma warned fiercely.
The man on the screen let out a patronizing sigh, resting his chin on his steepled fingers.
"Emma has always possessed a flair for the dramatic, a trait she undoubtedly inherited from your birth mother," he mused.
He tapped a few keys on his desk, and a digital document appeared on the screen beside his face.
It was a bank transfer receipt from thirty-two years ago, showing a deposit of five hundred thousand dollars into an account bearing my mother's name.
"We didn't just adopt Emma out of the goodness of our hearts," he explained coldly.
"We offered your mother a million dollars for both of you, knowing identical twins were highly valuable for specialized espionage."
My stomach churned with violent nausea as I stared at the irrefutable banking document.
"But your mother tried to negotiate for more money at the last minute," he continued, his tone dripping with disgust.
"When we refused, she took half the cash and kept you, completely destroying the symmetry we desired."
I looked at Emma, who was staring at the floor, her jaw clenched tightly.
"Is it true?" I asked, my voice cracking with profound betrayal.
Did the mother I loved, the woman who worked three jobs to keep a roof over my head, actually try to sell me to a criminal syndicate?
"It doesn't matter if it's true," Emma said sharply, finally looking up at me.
"She kept you, Emily. She chose to keep you safe from them, even if she made a terrible mistake at first."
Ashley scoffed loudly from her hiding spot behind a server rack.
"She kept you, but she still took half a million dollars and lied about being poor her entire life," Ashley pointed out ruthlessly.
The man on the screen clapped his hands together slowly, clearly enjoying the chaos he was sowing.
"The truth is always so devastating, isn't it?" he smiled.
He leaned back in his leather chair, dropping the conversational tone entirely.
"Now, we have a very simple business transaction to complete, Emma," he stated firmly.
"I have locked the server room ventilation system, and in exactly three minutes, it will begin pumping a lethal neurotoxin into the air."
My blood ran completely cold as I heard the faint, terrifying hiss of gas valves engaging in the ceiling vents above us.
"If you want your sister to survive, Emma, you will upload the decrypted syndicate files you stole from us ten years ago directly into this mainframe," he demanded.
He was holding us hostage, using my life as leverage to regain the catastrophic secrets Emma had stolen.
Emma frantically pulled a small, heavily encrypted flash drive from her tactical vest.
"If I give you the files, you have to open the doors and let Emily and Ashley go," Emma negotiated rapidly.
The man smiled, shaking his head gently.
"I will let them go, Emma, but you are staying here," he dictated.
"You belong to Vanguard, and you always will."
Emma didn't hesitate for a single second.
She walked over to the main server terminal, ready to sacrifice her freedom and her life to save a sister she barely knew.
"Don't do it, Emma!" I shouted, grabbing her shoulder and pulling her away from the keyboard.
"If you give him the files, he will kill all of us anyway!"
Emma looked at me, her eyes filled with desperate, heartbreaking resignation.
"I can't let you die for my mistakes, Emily," she whispered softly.
Before she could plug the flash drive into the terminal, Ashley suddenly sprinted across the room.
She snatched the flash drive directly out of Emma's hand and bolted toward the heavy steel security shutters.
"Ashley, what are you doing?" I screamed in absolute horror.
Ashley held the flash drive high in the air, looking directly at the security camera mounted on the ceiling.

"I have the files!" Ashley shouted to the man on the monitor, completely betraying us.
"If you open the door and let me walk out of here with a million dollars, I will slide this drive under the shutter right now!"
