Chapter 4 - The Twin

I stared at the woman standing in the doorway, completely paralyzed by the impossible sight of my own face looking back at me.

Emma was dressed in dark, tactical clothing, her hair pulled back into a tight braid, and her expression was hardened by years of survival.

"We don't have time for a reunion, Emily," Emma stated coldly, stepping fully into the room and grabbing my arm.

"He isn't working alone, and the rest of his team is already inside the bank."

Ashley scrambled out from under the table, her eyes wide with sheer panic as she looked back and forth between the two of us.

"Who the hell are you?" Ashley shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Emma.

"I'm the reason your mother is dead," Emma replied bluntly, showing absolutely no remorse for her harsh words.

She didn't wait for Ashley to process the shock; she simply shoved both of us toward the open doorway.

"Keep your heads down and follow exactly in my footsteps," Emma ordered, raising her pistol as she scanned the dark hallway.

We crept out of the viewing room, the emergency backup lights casting long, eerie shadows across the bank's polished floors.

The lobby was completely deserted, the employees and customers having fled when the power grid failed.

"How did you know we were here?" I whispered, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I've been tracking their communications for three years," Emma explained quietly, keeping her eyes fixed on the front entrance.

"When they intercepted the court order for the safe-deposit box, I knew they would use it to trap you."

She paused at the corner of the teller counter, signaling for us to stop.

Two men in dark suits, carrying suppressed submachine guns, were standing by the heavy glass doors of the main entrance.

"They locked the doors from the inside," Emma muttered, assessing the tactical disadvantage.

"We can't go out the front, they have snipers positioned on the rooftops across the street."

Ashley began to hyperventilate, clutching her designer purse to her chest as if it could protect her from bullets.

"I just wanted the diamonds," Ashley sobbed quietly, completely broken by the reality of the situation.

Emma glared at her, completely devoid of sympathy.

"There were never any diamonds," Emma stated ruthlessly.

"That story was a cover Mom invented to explain why she always kept that safe-deposit key hidden."

I felt a sudden pang of deep sadness for my mother, realizing her entire life had been consumed by the terrible secret of our birth.

"There has to be a back exit," I suggested, trying to focus on survival instead of grief.

"The loading dock," Emma confirmed, pointing toward the rear of the building.

We moved silently through the maze of cubicles and offices, heading toward the employee breakroom.

Suddenly, a loud, metallic crash echoed from the loading dock doors.

They were breaching the rear exit, effectively trapping us between the two heavily armed teams.

"We are boxed in," Emma said, her voice finally betraying a hint of genuine fear.

She pulled a small, explosive breaching charge from her tactical vest and slapped it onto the thick concrete wall of the bank vault.

"What are you doing?" I asked, terrified she was going to blow us all up.

"The bank shares a wall with the subway tunnels," Emma explained quickly, arming the digital detonator.

"When this blows, you have exactly ten seconds to dive through the hole before the structural supports collapse."

She grabbed me by the shoulders, looking deeply into my eyes for the very first time.

"If we get separated, do not look for me, Emily," she commanded fiercely.

"Run as fast as you can, and never tell anyone your real name again."

Before I could promise anything, she pressed the detonator.

The explosion was deafening, a concussive wave of force that knocked all three of us flat onto our backs.

Thick gray smoke instantly filled the room as the concrete wall shattered, revealing the dark, echoing expanse of the subway tunnel beyond.

"Go!" Emma screamed, pulling me to my feet and shoving me toward the jagged hole.

I scrambled through the rubble, coughing violently as the dust choked my lungs.

May you like

I turned back to grab Ashley's hand, but she wasn't following me.

Through the settling smoke, I saw Ashley standing perfectly still, holding the dead hitman's dropped pistol, and aiming it directly at Emma's back.
