Chapter 10 - The Last Promise

I stared at the glowing document on Elias's laptop screen, a cold shiver racing down my spine.

"What is Project Gemini?" I asked, pointing a trembling finger at the flagged file.

Elias’s warm smile instantly vanished, his expression turning deeply grim as he clicked on the document.

"It is Vanguard's ultimate contingency plan," Elias explained quietly, his eyes scanning the dense text.

"If the organization is ever compromised, they initiate a burn protocol to eliminate all loose ends, especially high-value assets."

He looked up at Emma, his eyes filled with genuine sorrow.

"You and Emily are the Gemini assets, Emma," he revealed. "And the kill order was automatically activated the moment their servers went down."

Emma’s face hardened into a mask of pure, unyielding resolve.

"They don't know where we are," Emma argued, gripping the handle of her pistol.

Elias shook his head slowly, pointing to a flashing red beacon on the digital map displayed on his screen.

"They don't need to track you," he said softly. "They tracked the flash drive Ashley tried to sell them."

I spun around to look at Ashley, who was standing near the cabin door, her face completely pale.

She reached into her designer purse and pulled out the small, black flash drive she had desperately fought for in the server room.

"I didn't know it was a tracker," Ashley whispered, her voice cracking with pure terror as she dropped the plastic device onto the floor.

Elias slammed his laptop shut and grabbed a heavy tactical shotgun from beside his chair.

"They are already here," he announced, the sound of heavy tires crushing gravel echoing from the dirt road outside.

Emma grabbed my arm, her eyes burning with a fierce, protective fire I had never seen before.

"Emily, take Ashley and run out the back door," Emma commanded, shoving a spare pistol into my trembling hands.

"There is a boat docked at the edge of the lake behind the cabin. Take it and don't look back."

"I am not leaving you behind again!" I shouted, tears stinging my eyes as I refused to move.

Emma pulled me into a sudden, crushing embrace, hugging me tighter than anyone ever had.

"You have to live, Emily, for both of us," she whispered fiercely into my ear. "It's the only way our mother's sacrifice means anything."

Before I could argue, the front windows of the cabin shattered inward as a hail of suppressed gunfire tore through the wooden walls.

Elias roared, unleashing a devastating blast from his shotgun toward the tree line, providing covering fire.

Emma shoved me forcefully toward the back exit, turning to join Elias in the desperate firefight.

I grabbed Ashley by the collar of her jacket and dragged her out into the freezing, rainy night.

We sprinted through the dense, dark woods, branches tearing at my clothes and scratching my face as we blindly followed the sound of the water.

Gunfire and explosions echoed violently from the cabin behind us, shaking the ground beneath our feet.

We finally reached the muddy edge of the lake and found a small motorized skiff tied to a wooden dock.

I shoved Ashley into the boat, frantically untying the thick mooring rope as the sounds of battle grew louder.

I yanked the pull cord on the outboard motor, praying it would start, and the engine roared to life on the first try.

I steered the boat out into the dark, expansive waters of the lake, looking back toward the tree line just as a massive explosion illuminated the night sky.

The cabin erupted into a brilliant, tragic fireball, completely consuming everything inside.

I fell to my knees in the bottom of the boat, weeping uncontrollably for the sister I had only just found, and lost again.

Three months later, I sat in a small, sunny café in a quiet coastal town in Maine, far away from my old life.

Vanguard had been completely destroyed, their leaders imprisoned globally, just as Elias had promised.

Ashley had moved to Europe, using a massive settlement check from the FBI to disappear quietly into a life of anonymous luxury.

I had legally changed my name, finally finding the peaceful, mundane existence I had always craved.

I sipped my hot coffee, watching the ocean waves crash against the rocky shore, feeling a quiet, enduring sadness in my heart.

The waitress walked over and placed a small, white envelope on the table next to my mug.

"A woman outside asked me to give this to you," the waitress smiled warmly.

I frowned, looking out the window, but the street was completely empty.

I opened the envelope with trembling fingers and pulled out a single, perfectly cut, flawless diamond.

May you like

Beneath the sparkling stone was a small, handwritten note written in precise, tactical print.

"I told you there were no diamonds in the safe-deposit box, but I never said I didn't steal them from Vanguard headquarters."
