Chapter 6 - The Custody Battle

The apartment felt completely hollow without the sound of my children's voices.
I spent the next forty-eight hours in a blur of desperate meetings with legal aid lawyers.
None of them gave me much hope.
My parents had money, influence, and a pristine public image in our town.
I was a single mother with a suddenly ruined credit score and a police report claiming I was violently unhinged.
Sarah kept me fed and hydrated, refusing to let me succumb to the despair.
On Monday morning, we attended the preliminary custody hearing at the county courthouse.
My parents sat across the aisle, looking like the picture of worried, loving grandparents.
Natalie was there too, dabbing at fake tears with an expensive tissue.
The judge reviewed the file and seemed ready to extend the temporary custody order indefinitely.
I felt like I was drowning in a nightmare I could not wake up from.
Then, my lawyer’s tablet buzzed loudly on the wooden table.
He glanced at the screen, frowned, and quickly opened an encrypted email attachment.
His eyes widened in shock before he leaned over to whisper in my ear.
"Did your daughter Megan have a cell phone on her during Thanksgiving dinner?" he asked.
I nodded, confused, remembering the cheap prepaid phone I gave her for school emergencies.
"She just sent me a video," the lawyer murmured, standing up rapidly to address the judge.
"Your Honor, we have new, explosive evidence that was just transmitted by the minor child from inside the petitioners' home."
May you like
My parents exchanged a nervous, terrified glance.
The judge permitted the video to be played, and the courtroom speakers crackled to life with the exact sound of my father's voice hissing his insults.
