Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

My father let go of my throat, but his rage simply found a new target.
Tyler ran at him with both arms extended, a brave eight-year-old trying to save his mother.
Richard did not see a child.
He saw an obstacle.
His heavy leather shoe swung forward and struck my son in the chest.
Tyler flew backward, hitting the hardwood floor with a sickening thud.
A collective gasp rippled through the dining room, but nobody stood up to help.
My mother covered her mouth, not in horror at her husband, but in annoyance at the disruption.
Natalie actually rolled her eyes at the scene.
The primal scream that ripped from my throat did not even sound human.
I lunged forward, shoving my father backward into the Thanksgiving table.
Crystal shattered, and the golden turkey slid onto the expensive rug.

"We are leaving," I growled, daring anyone in that room to stop me.
Nobody did, though Richard cursed at me as we rushed out the front door into the freezing night.
I fumbled for my keys, desperate to get my children into the safety of my car.
I clicked the unlock button, but the car tilted strangely to the left.

I looked down in the dim street light.
All four of my tires had been slashed to the rims.
