Chapter 10 - The Hidden Truth

I carefully pressed the concealed brass latch, and the false bottom of the heavy wooden jewelry box popped open with a quiet click.
Inside the secret compartment rested a stack of faded, yellowing envelopes tied neatly together with a thin silk ribbon.
I pulled the letters out, my curiosity piqued by the extreme lengths my grandmother had gone to hide them.
The top envelope was addressed directly to me, written in my grandmother's unmistakable, elegant cursive handwriting.
I sat down on the edge of my new bed, gently breaking the wax seal and unfolding the fragile parchment.
The letter began with a profound apology, stating that she had left me the house to protect me from my parents' relentless greed.
But the second paragraph made my heart completely stop beating in my chest.
"Sarah, if you are reading this, it means you have successfully defeated your parents and claimed what is yours," the letter read.
"However, there is a terrible secret I have kept hidden from you to ensure your safety all these years."
I scanned the words rapidly, my eyes widening in absolute shock as the truth of my family history was finally laid bare.
"Heather is not your biological sister, and the man you call your father is not her biological parent either," my grandmother wrote.
She explained that my mother had an affair with a highly dangerous, incredibly violent man long before I was born.
When that man was sent to a maximum-security prison, my parents raised Heather as their own to hide the scandalous truth.
"They always favored Heather because they were terrified of what her real father would do if he found out she was mistreated," the letter continued.
I reached back into the secret compartment and pulled out a pristine, original birth certificate wrapped in plastic.
The document confirmed exactly what my grandmother had written, listing a man named Victor Vance as Heather's real father.
I pulled out my phone and quickly searched the name Victor Vance in the state prison database.
The search results loaded instantly, displaying a mugshot of a terrifying man with cold, dead eyes.

My blood ran completely cold as I read the bright red status update flashing at the top of his digital inmate file.
Victor Vance had been granted early parole, and he had been officially released from federal prison exactly three days ago.
