Chapter 3 - The False Report

I stood frozen in the lobby as the officers asked me to turn around and place my hands behind my back.
I did not panic, nor did I raise my voice.
I calmly asked the officers to look at the legal registration documents in my purse.
I handed them the vehicle title, which clearly proved I was the sole owner and had fully paid off the car three years ago.
I then pulled up the bank statements on my phone, proving the frozen money came exclusively from my own direct deposits.
The older officer sighed heavily, realizing my parents had weaponized the police to force me back home.
He handed my documents back and apologized for the inconvenience, promising to file a report against my parents for falsifying a crime.
I thanked him and returned to my office, my hands shaking with a mixture of relief and absolute rage.
They were willing to send me to prison just to force me to continue funding Madison's lifestyle.
I opened my laptop and created a fake social media account to see what they were doing.
My mother had just posted a frantic, tearful video on her public profile.
She was standing in my old bedroom, crying to the camera about how her ungrateful daughter had abandoned them.
But the video was not just a plea for sympathy.
At the bottom of the screen, there was a link to a crowdfunding campaign.
Madison was claiming I had stolen her vital medical fund, and they were begging the internet for donations to save her life.
I was about to close the browser in disgust when my office door suddenly opened.

The CEO of the company, Julian Sterling, walked in holding a printed document.
He placed the paper on my desk and told me we needed to have a very serious conversation about my background check.
