Chapter 10 - The False Victory

I stared at the name on the legal document, the expensive champagne suddenly turning to ash in my mouth.

My heart began to hammer violently against my ribs as my eyes darted across the remaining pages of the contract.

The document I was about to sign was not an acquisition at all.

It was a legally binding transfer of all my personal assets and corporate shares directly into Madison's holding company.

I slowly looked up at Julian, expecting him to be just as shocked and confused as I was.

Julian was not looking at the paper; he was swirling his champagne with a cold, calculating smile on his face.

He did not look like the supportive mentor who had helped me escape my abusive family.

He looked exactly like the predator who had orchestrated my entire downfall.

"You really are brilliant, Claire, but you have always been tragically desperate for validation," Julian whispered smoothly.

He walked over to the balcony edge, turning his back on me to admire the glittering city lights.

I backed away from the table, my hands trembling as the horrific pieces of the puzzle finally slammed together.

Julian was the wealthy, international tech investor Madison had been secretly dating for the last two years.

My sister had not manipulated a corporate syndicate; she had partnered with Julian to steal his rival's algorithms using my father as the perfect, disposable pawn.

They had deliberately pushed me to the breaking point so I would leave home and fall directly into Julian's welcoming trap.

I had done all the heavy lifting, gathering the evidence to put my own parents in federal prison so Madison and Julian could walk away clean.

"You used me to clean up your mess," I choked out, tears of absolute fury burning my eyes.

Julian turned around and chuckled softly, placing his empty glass on the stone railing.

"Madison always said you would do all the hard work if someone just pointed you in the right direction," he mocked gently.

I grabbed the leather folder and prepared to tear the contract into a thousand pieces.

Before my fingers could rip the paper, Julian's cell phone lit up on the glass patio table.

The screen displayed an incoming video call, and Julian calmly pressed the answer button to project the image onto a nearby monitor.

Madison's face appeared on the screen, looking tanned, relaxed, and incredibly wealthy on a tropical beach.

She smiled her signature, arrogant smirk and waved lazily at the camera.

"The parents took the fall perfectly, darling," Madison purred, her eyes shifting to look directly at me through the lens.

"Now tell my sweet, gullible sister that if she doesn't sign that transfer immediately, I am going to release the heavily edited video that proves she was the one who stole your company's data in the first place."
