Chapter 6 - The Dark Secret

I felt the hospital floor drop out from underneath my feet.
My own mother had spent weeks carefully laying the groundwork to legally steal my child.
I ran to my husband's hospital room and found him sitting up in bed, a thick bandage wrapped around his head.
I collapsed into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably as I told him what happened.
He held me tightly, his jaw clenched with a terrifying, cold fury.
He swore to me that we would get our baby back no matter what it took.
We checked him out of the hospital completely against medical advice.
We drove straight to the local Child Protective Services office downtown.
The social worker sitting behind the thick glass partition refused to give us any information.
She stated that the baby's location was strictly confidential until a judge ruled on the case.
We begged, we pleaded, and we presented the official police clearance paperwork.
The social worker simply said the legal system takes time, and the court hearing was scheduled for next week.
We walked out to the parking lot, completely broken and utterly defeated.
My husband suddenly stopped walking and pulled his car keys from his pocket.
He realized my mother was released on bail hours before the police found the 911 audio.
If she was out of jail, she would undoubtedly try to find the baby.
We drove back to our damaged house to search for anything that could help us.
The front door was still broken from the aggressive police raid.
The kitchen smelled strongly of smoke, gas, and sheer terror.
We tore my mother's bedroom apart, frantically searching for journals, documents, or a computer.
Underneath a loose floorboard in her closet, my husband found a small, locked metal lockbox.
He smashed it open with a heavy hammer.
Inside, we found forged birth certificates, fake passports, and a heavily redacted medical file from a psychiatric hospital dated thirty years ago.

The patient name on the file wasn't my mother's name.
It was the exact name of the social worker who had just refused to tell us where our baby was.
