Chapter 5 - The Stolen Child

I slammed my chained hands heavily onto the metal table.

I told the detective that my husband would never say such a terrible thing.

I knew it was a classic police interrogation tactic designed to make me confess.

I demanded a lawyer and refused to say another single word.

The detective sighed, closed his laptop, and walked out of the room.

I sat alone in the freezing room for what felt like agonizing hours.

My mind raced with terrifying thoughts about my baby's severe burns.

I prayed my husband was strong enough to fight through his terrible head injury.

Finally, the heavy metal door clicked open again.

A different officer walked in and immediately unlocked my handcuffs.

He told me I was being released without any criminal charges.

I rubbed my bruised wrists, completely confused by the sudden change in their attitude.

The officer explained that they had recovered the dropped cell phone from my kitchen floor.

The 911 dispatcher had recorded the entire audio of the horrific incident before the call disconnected.

The recording clearly captured my mother swinging the pan and screaming her insane theories about driving the sickness out.

The audio definitively proved my innocence and my mother's absolute guilt.

I rushed out of the police station and took a speeding taxi straight to the hospital.

I ran through the sliding glass doors, desperately asking for the pediatric intensive care unit.

A nurse recognized my name and pulled me aside with a deeply sympathetic look.

She told me my husband was stable, but my baby was in critical condition.

The burns were severe, and the original fever had spiked to incredibly dangerous levels.

I demanded to see my child immediately.

The nurse shook her head, tears welling up in her own eyes.

She told me the baby was no longer in the hospital.

Child Protective Services had taken emergency custody an hour ago.

Because my mother had filed an anonymous abuse report against us a month prior, the state had legal grounds to seize my child during the investigation.
