Chapter 3 - The False Accusation

The tiny flame illuminated the absolute madness in her eyes.

The smell of gas was overpowering, burning the back of my throat.

My husband shielded our crying baby with his entire body, turning his back to the room.

I lunged forward and slapped the lighter out of her hand before she could drop it.

The metal casing shattered against the tile floor.

I grabbed my mother by the collar and dragged her away from the broken gas line.

Sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.

My mother realized her twisted plan had failed.

She suddenly scrambled to her feet and sprinted out of the kitchen.

I heard the heavy deadbolt lock engage on the other side of the door.

She had intentionally locked us inside the gas-filled room.

I ran to the kitchen window and smashed the glass with a wooden rolling pin.

Fresh air rushed in, saving us from the immediate threat of suffocation.

The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers illuminated the front yard.

I yelled through the broken window, desperately begging for help.

Officers kicked the front door down and swarmed into the house.

Paramedics rushed into the kitchen through the window and took my baby from my husband.

They immediately applied burn dressings and administered oxygen.

My husband collapsed onto the floor, the severe head wound finally taking its toll.

I followed the paramedics as they carried my child out to the waiting ambulance.

In the front yard, two police officers were placing my mother in handcuffs.

She wasn't fighting them at all.

Instead, she was sobbing uncontrollably, putting on a flawless performance of a devastated grandmother.

She pointed a trembling finger directly at me as I walked out the door.

She told the police that I had lost my mind and tried to cook my own child.

The lead officer turned to me, his hand resting cautiously on his weapon.
