Chapter 6 - The Fall

The cold morning wind whipped around me as I dangled helplessly from the fragile aluminum gutter.
Mark smiled with a chilling, psychopathic calmness as he perfectly aligned the sights of his pistol.
"Goodbye, Sarah," he whispered, a twisted satisfaction dripping from his voice.
Before he could pull the heavy trigger, the wailing sound of approaching fire engines shattered the quiet neighborhood.
Mark's eyes widened in sudden panic as he realized his perfect crime was unraveling in real-time.
He quickly lowered the weapon, shoved it into the waistband of his jeans, and sprinted toward the dense woods behind our property.
The metal gutter groaned under my shifting weight, the screws violently tearing free from the wooden fascia board.
I plummeted toward the ground, bracing myself for the inevitable, bone-crushing impact.
I crashed heavily into the thick, thorny rose bushes lining the patio, the sharp branches slicing deeply into my arms and legs.
The agonizing pain radiated through my entire body, but I forced myself to crawl away from the burning structure.
A team of firefighters rushed through the side gate, immediately pulling me to safety and laying me on the cool grass.
Detective Reynolds ran up behind them, her face pale as she took in the horrific scene.
"Where is your husband?" she demanded, kneeling beside me in the mud.
I weakly pointed a bloody finger toward the dark, heavily wooded area behind the fence.
"He fled toward the woods, and he has a gun," I gasped, fighting to stay conscious.
I reached into my torn pocket and pulled out the small, metal backup hard drive.
"This drive proves everything about the poisoning and the trust fund conspiracy," I whispered, pressing it firmly into her hand.
The detective immediately radioed for a massive tactical perimeter and an organized manhunt.
Paramedics loaded me onto a stretcher and rushed me back to the exact same hospital where this nightmare had begun.
They treated my cuts and stabilized my breathing in a secure, heavily guarded trauma room.
Detective Reynolds walked in an hour later, holding a laptop and wearing a triumphant expression.
"The footage on your drive is crystal clear, and we have officially issued federal arrest warrants for both Mark and Diane," she announced.
Tears of immense relief streamed down my bruised face as I thanked her repeatedly.
"Have you located the private jet they plan to use?" I asked frantically.
The detective's confident smile suddenly faded into a look of deep, unsettling concern.
"The local airfield confirms that Diane's private plane took off exactly twenty minutes ago."

My heart stopped completely as the terrifying reality washed over me.
"But the flight manifest clearly shows that Diane boarded that plane entirely alone," the detective added grimly.
