Chapter 1 - The Accusation

I stared at the man I had loved for five years, completely unable to comprehend his words.

The two police officers exchanged a tense, suspicious glance before stepping further into the small hospital room.

"Sir, we need you to step back and lower your voice," the taller officer instructed firmly.

Mark ignored the command entirely and pointed a trembling, accusatory finger directly at my face.

"My mother called me on my way here and told me exactly what you did," he shouted.

"She said you snapped because the baby wouldn't stop crying, and you threw her on the floor in a fit of rage."

My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I thought it might physically break through my chest.

"That is a complete, malicious lie!" I screamed, fresh tears instantly welling in my eyes.

"Diane slapped me across the face while I was holding Daisy, and the impact made me drop her."

Before Mark could yell another insult, Dr. Evans stepped between us with a deeply grave expression.

"The physical trauma from the fall is actually not our primary medical concern right now," the doctor stated quietly.

The entire hospital room fell into a suffocating, heavy silence.

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice barely a raspy whisper.

Dr. Evans looked at the police officers for a moment before turning his sympathetic gaze back to me.

"When we ran routine blood panels to check the infant for internal injuries, we found something else entirely."

He took a deep breath, clutching a thick manila folder tightly to his chest.

"Daisy has incredibly dangerous levels of a powerful prescription sedative in her tiny bloodstream."

My knees finally buckled, and I had to grab the edge of the hospital bed to keep from collapsing onto the linoleum floor.

"Someone has been deliberately poisoning your three-week-old daughter for several days," the doctor revealed.

Mark immediately spun around and glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred burning in his eyes.

"You psychotic, miserable monster," he sneered, lunging violently toward me.

The two police officers tackled Mark against the wall before he could wrap his hands around my throat.

I backed into the corner, completely paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the nightmare unfolding around me.

The taller officer quickly pulled a pair of heavy metal handcuffs from his tactical belt.

But to my absolute horror, he did not put them on my violent husband.

The officer walked directly toward me, grabbed my wrists, and forcefully pulled my hands behind my back.

"Ma'am, you are being detained under suspicion of severe child endangerment," the officer said coldly.
