Chapter 4 - The Secret Motive

The revelation hit the interrogation room like a massive, unpredictable earthquake.
I stared at Dr. Evans in sheer confusion, my mind completely unable to process his words.
"That is biologically impossible," I stammered, shaking my head wildly.
"Mark is the only man I have ever been with since we got married five years ago."
The detective looked closely at the medical paperwork, her hardened demeanor finally beginning to crack.
"The DNA test does not lie, ma'am," she noted quietly.
"If Mark knew this child wasn't his, it provides a very strong motive for him to want the baby out of the picture."
My brain scrambled to connect the impossible dots of this terrifying conspiracy.
We had struggled with infertility for years before finally seeking help at a highly exclusive private clinic.
Mark's mother, Diane, was a wealthy former board member of that exact same medical facility.
"The fertility clinic," I whispered, the horrifying realization chilling the blood in my veins.
"Diane manipulated the donor samples during my IVF procedure to ensure the baby wasn't biologically related to Mark."
Detective Reynolds slowly unclipped the keys from her belt and unlocked my handcuffs.
"You are free to go for now, but you are not cleared as a suspect yet," she warned me.
I rubbed my bruised wrists, my sorrow instantly transforming into a blazing, maternal rage.
I had to get to my baby before Diane and Mark could finish whatever sick game they were playing.
I remembered an old, hidden backup hard drive I had installed in the nursery wall behind a painting.
It was completely independent from the cloud storage system that Mark had deleted.
I borrowed the detective's phone and ordered an emergency ride-share back to my neighborhood.
I arrived at my house just as the sun began to rise over the quiet, suburban street.
Mark's car was conspicuously missing from the driveway, giving me the perfect opportunity to sneak inside.
I quietly unlocked the back door and crept up the carpeted stairs toward the nursery.
I pulled the painting off the wall and felt a massive wave of relief when my fingers brushed the small metal drive.
I pulled it out and turned around to leave the room.
The heavy wooden nursery door suddenly slammed shut right in front of my face.

The distinct sound of the exterior deadbolt sliding into place echoed through the silent house.
"Did you really think I wouldn't know about your little secret backup drive, Sarah?" Mark's cruel voice hissed through the baby monitor on the dresser.
