Chapter 6 - The True Mastermind

I stood perfectly still as the barrel of the silver handgun remained locked on my chest.

My mind spun out of control, trying to process the catastrophic betrayal I had just walked into.

Sarah's harsh laughter echoed off the high corrugated metal ceilings of the abandoned warehouse.

She proudly confessed that she had faked her own death to escape federal fraud charges a decade ago.

She had spent the last ten years operating a massive identity theft ring from the shadows.

James had discovered her survival last year and had been trying to build a case against her ever since.

Sarah revealed that Linda had not put shellfish extract in my pasta at the restaurant.

Linda had actually been trying to swap my poisoned plate with a safe one.

Sarah had bribed the restaurant manager to lace my food and edit the security footage to frame my mother-in-law.

She wanted Linda in prison and James distracted so she could steal his secure corporate database.

I realized that the entire narrative I had believed for the past forty-eight hours was a carefully constructed illusion.

Vance stepped forward, grabbing my arms and forcefully securing them behind my back with heavy zip ties.

Sarah downloaded the last of the encrypted files onto a sleek black USB drive and slipped it into her pocket.

She told Vance to clean up the warehouse and make sure my body was never found.

She walked toward the heavy steel exit doors, leaving me completely at the mercy of her massive bodyguard.

Vance shoved me into a metal chair and pulled a roll of industrial duct tape from his tactical vest.

I frantically begged him to reconsider, offering to double whatever Sarah was paying him.

Vance ignored my pleas, tearing off a large piece of tape to cover my mouth.

Suddenly, the entire warehouse plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

The hum of the massive computer servers died instantly, signaling the main power grid had been cut.

Vance cursed loudly, dropping the tape and drawing his own weapon in the dark.

A deafening crash echoed from the front of the building as an armored vehicle rammed through the steel doors.

Blinding tactical spotlights pierced through the darkness, completely disorienting Vance.

I squinted against the harsh light and saw a familiar figure jump out of the heavily modified truck.

It was James, wearing a bulletproof vest and holding a tactical shotgun.

He aimed the weapon directly at Vance and ordered the mercenary to drop his gun immediately.

Vance hesitated for a fraction of a second, calculating his odds of survival.

Before Vance could make a move, a second person stepped out of the truck.

It was Officer Lorraine Boyd, the exact same cop who had arrested Linda.

She aimed her service weapon at Vance, demanding he surrender to federal authorities.

I felt a massive wave of relief wash over me, believing my husband had finally come to save me.

But as the emergency backup lights flickered on, I noticed something deeply wrong.

Officer Boyd was not wearing a police badge, and her uniform was completely stripped of its insignias.

She lowered her gun, turned toward James, and calmly shot my husband in the shoulder.
