Chapter 3 - The Secret Account

I stared at the glowing tablet screen, feeling the walls of the bedroom closing in on me.
Linda was sitting in a car outside my house, but the email terrified me even more.
I clicked the encrypted file and watched as a series of offshore bank statements loaded on the screen.
The account was registered under a shell corporation, but James's signature was on the founding documents.
The ledger showed massive monthly deposits originating from an unknown source.
The most recent transaction was a withdrawal for exactly five hundred thousand dollars in cash.
The date and time of the withdrawal perfectly matched the moment Linda's bail was posted.
My husband was the mysterious benefactor who had just bought his mother's freedom.
The same man who had jammed an EpiPen into my leg to save my life had paid to set my attacker free.
My brain could not reconcile the two completely opposing versions of the man I loved.
I quickly forwarded the documents to a hidden email address I used for emergencies.
I deleted the original message and wiped the browsing history just as James walked back into the room.
He wrapped his strong arms around my waist and kissed the top of my head.
He whispered that all the doors were locked and I was completely safe with him.
I forced myself to lean into his embrace, fighting the intense urge to push him away and run.
I had to play the role of the traumatized, trusting wife until I figured out his endgame.
The next morning, James left for his corporate office, claiming he had an unavoidable board meeting.
The moment his car turned the corner, I grabbed my laptop and called a private investigator.
I hired a former detective named Marcus and sent him the offshore banking records.
Marcus called me back three hours later, sounding incredibly breathless and agitated.
He told me I needed to pack a bag and leave the house immediately.
He discovered that the shell corporation was not just hoarding money.
The company had recently purchased a massive, remote piece of land in the desert.
They had also hired a private contractor to construct a soundproof, underground bunker on the property.
Marcus warned me that the bunker was registered under a very specific medical code.
It was zoned as a private, long-term psychiatric care facility.
James was not planning to murder me for the life insurance money anymore.
He and his mother were planning to lock me away and declare me legally incompetent.
I ran to the closet and pulled down my oldest suitcase.
I was throwing clothes into the bag when I heard the unmistakable sound of a key turning in the front door.
It was supposed to be impossible because James had taken my spare key, and the deadbolt was engaged.

Heavy footsteps began slowly ascending the wooden staircase.
The footsteps did not belong to my husband, and they certainly did not belong to Linda.
