Chapter 1 - The Contents of the Purse

Officer Lorraine Boyd stood like a statue in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the hospital corridor.
Her gloved hand remained extended, waiting for my mother-in-law to comply with her lawful order.
Linda hesitated, her perfectly manicured fingers trembling against the gold hardware of her designer handbag.
She looked toward James, her eyes wide and swimming with manufactured tears.
She begged her son to intervene and stop this absolute madness.
James did not move a single inch to help her.
His jaw was clenched so tightly that I could see a muscle jumping in his cheek.
He told his mother to open the bag before the officer arrested her for obstruction.
Linda let out a dramatic gasp, acting as if she had just been physically struck.
The clasp of the purse snapped open with a sharp, echoing click.
Officer Boyd reached inside with practiced precision, ignoring the expensive silk lining.
She bypassed the compact mirrors and loose receipts, digging straight for the bottom.
Her fingers emerged holding a small, dark amber glass bottle.
There was no label on the vial, but the remaining thick brown liquid was undeniable.
It perfectly matched the deadly shellfish extract that the restaurant manager had secured as evidence.
Linda immediately started speaking a mile a minute.
She claimed it was just a homeopathic remedy she bought online to cure my irrational food anxiety.
She swore she only meant to put a tiny drop in my food to prove I would be perfectly fine.
Officer Boyd did not bother responding to the ridiculous excuse.
She handed the vial to a junior officer in a plastic evidence bag.
But the veteran cop was not finished searching the designer purse.
She reached into a zippered side compartment and pulled out a thick, folded stack of legal papers.
I watched the stoic expression on Officer Boyd's face finally shift into genuine disgust.
She unfolded the document and read the first page in total silence.
The officer then looked up at James, then at me, with a gaze that made my blood run cold.
She asked Linda why she was carrying a freshly notarized life insurance policy.
The policy named me as the primary insured party.
The coverage amount was for three million dollars in the event of accidental death.
The sole beneficiary listed on the binding legal document was Linda herself.
My heart hammered against my ribs as the horrifying truth washed over me.
This was never about a stubborn woman trying to prove a point about allergies.
This was a premeditated assassination attempt for massive financial gain.
Officer Boyd pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt and ordered Linda to turn around.
Linda screamed and thrashed as the cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.
James wrapped his arms around me, burying his face in my hair as his mother was dragged away.
I thought the worst nightmare of my entire life was finally over.
Then my cell phone buzzed in the pocket of my hospital gown.
I answered the unknown number with a shaking voice, assuming it was the police precinct.
Instead, a heavily distorted, robotic voice whispered through the speaker.

The voice warned me that Linda was only the desperate pawn in a much larger game.
The caller said the person who actually funded the insurance policy was standing right next to me.
