Chapter 9 - The Standoff

Julian’s eyes were completely wild and filled with manic desperation.

He had clearly faked his own brutal death with his mother’s help to completely evade federal prosecution.

Mr. Vance stood perfectly still, his hands raised slowly in the air.

"Julian, if you shoot me in a highly secure bank vault, you will never escape the city," the old lawyer warned calmly.

"I don't care about escaping anymore," Julian spat, cocking the hammer of the gun.

"I just want the billions of dollars hidden inside that black ledger."

I tightly clutched the heavy briefcase against my chest.

My mind raced through every possible tactical option in the sealed, soundproof room.

I noticed a small, red emergency fire suppression button mounted on the wall directly behind Julian.

"Okay, Julian, you win," I lied smoothly, taking a slow step forward.

I held out the briefcase with my trembling, uninjured arm.

Julian smiled greedily and reached out with his free hand to grab the handle.

In that exact split second, I aggressively kicked his knee with all my remaining strength.

Julian stumbled backward in shock, his finger slipping off the trigger.

I instantly lunged past him and smashed my fist violently into the red emergency button.

The vault's halon gas fire suppression system immediately activated with a deafening, piercing alarm.

Thick, blinding white chemical smoke flooded aggressively into the small room from the ceiling vents.

Julian choked and fired a wild, blind shot that shattered a wall of deposit boxes.

I grabbed Mr. Vance by his coat and dragged him low to the ground toward the heavy vault door.

The electronic lock automatically disengaged due to the massive fire protocol.

We burst out into the main lobby just as heavily armed tactical police units swarmed through the front entrance.

The audio files I had sent to the Inspector General had finally triggered a legitimate, massive federal raid.

Julian stumbled out of the vault a moment later, coughing violently and still holding his weapon.

Dozens of red laser sights instantly painted his chest.

He wisely dropped the gun and fell to his knees in total defeat.

As they dragged a screaming Julian away in heavy iron chains, my phone buzzed in my pocket.

It was an alert from federal border patrol tracking Eleanor's movements.

"They just grounded her private jet on the runway," Mr. Vance smiled, reading the message over my shoulder.

"The pilot was an undercover federal agent the entire time."
