Chapter 8 - The Ghost Ledger

I stared at the small silver key resting on the cold metal table.
My late father had always used a specific, highly secure private bank in the financial district.
"The inspector hid the blackmail ledger in my father's old, dormant account," I realized aloud.
Mr. Vance nodded slowly, glancing nervously at the security camera in the corner.
"I managed to get a sympathetic federal judge to grant you a twenty-four-hour medical furlough," he whispered.
"We have to go to that bank the exact moment they release you tomorrow morning."
The next day, I walked out of the prison wearing a heavy coat to hide my burn scars.
Mr. Vance was waiting for me in an unmarked, bulletproof town car.
We drove silently through the chaotic morning traffic of the city.
When we arrived at the massive marble bank, the vault manager recognized my father's name immediately.
He escorted us deep underground to the heavily fortified, climate-controlled safety deposit room.
I inserted the silver key into box number 402 and turned it slowly.
Inside was a thick, black leather ledger and a single USB drive.
I opened the ledger and saw decades of meticulously recorded illegal transactions.
Eleanor had not just bribed building inspectors; she had been laundering cartel money for thirty years.
"This is enough evidence to put her away for three consecutive lifetimes," Mr. Vance said triumphantly.
We quickly packed the evidence into a briefcase and turned to leave the vault.
The heavy steel door of the vault suddenly hissed and began to swing shut.
A man stepped into the secure room just before the massive door locked perfectly into place.
He was wearing a dark, tailored suit and a low-brimmed hat.
He slowly removed the hat and looked up with a wicked, familiar smile.
It was Julian.
He looked completely unharmed, without a single scratch on his smug face.
"Did you honestly think a cheap car fire could kill me, Clara?" he laughed darkly.
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a heavy, suppressed pistol.
May you like
Julian pointed the weapon directly at the center of Mr. Vance's forehead.
"Hand over the black ledger, or the old man's brains will paint this expensive marble floor."
