Chapter 5 - The Safehouse Breach

I slowly stood up and walked toward the heavy curtains of the safehouse window.

My hands trembled as I carefully pulled the thick fabric back just an inch.

Three unmarked black SUVs were parked on the dark, quiet street outside.

Heavily armed men in tactical gear were quietly stepping out of the vehicles.

Julian had somehow tracked the burner phone Mr. Vance provided me.

"I am going to burn the rest of you this time, Clara," Julian whispered through the phone before hanging up.

I immediately sprinted toward the back door of the small suburban house.

The sound of shattering glass echoed violently from the front living room.

Heavy boots pounded against the hardwood floors as the mercenaries breached the perimeter.

I slipped out the back door and ran blindly into the freezing, rain-soaked woods.

The agonizing pain in my shoulder flared, but raw adrenaline forced me to keep moving.

Flashlight beams aggressively sliced through the dense, dark trees behind me.

I could hear dogs aggressively barking in the distance.

I hid beneath a massive, rotting log, completely covering my mouth to silence my ragged breathing.

One of the armed men walked right past my hiding spot, his heavy boots splashing in the mud.

I waited until the woods were entirely silent before carefully crawling out.

I walked for three miles until I finally reached a deserted, brightly lit gas station.

I used a payphone to call the direct line of a federal investigator Mr. Vance had mentioned.

Agent Harris arrived in a black government sedan within twenty minutes.

He showed me his badge and gently helped me into the warm passenger seat.

"You are safe now, Mrs. Vance," the agent promised sincerely.

"We have your sister securely in federal custody, and she is entirely unharmed."

I broke down crying, finally releasing the massive weight of the terror I had been carrying.

Agent Harris drove us into the underground parking garage of the FBI field office.

He led me into a sterile, windowless interrogation room and offered me a cup of hot coffee.

"I just need you to sign this official victim statement," he said, handing me a file.

I opened the folder and read the first paragraph.

It was not a victim statement at all.

It was a full, legally binding confession stating that I was the mastermind behind the inspector bribery ring.

I looked up at Agent Harris in sheer shock.

He slowly locked the interrogation room door and pulled a suppressed pistol from his holster.
