Chapter 7 - The Arrests

“FEDERAL POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON!”

A dozen heavily armed tactical officers swarmed the living room, their rifles trained on Alejandro. My lawyer walked in right behind them, holding a signed federal warrant.

Alejandro looked at the laser sights dancing across his chest. He slowly lowered the gun, letting it drop to the floor.

Officers tackled Diego, zip-tying his wrists as he spat blood onto the expensive rugs. Isabella shrieked as cold steel handcuffs were clamped around her wrists, her designer dress tearing in the struggle.

Tomas held his hands out willingly. “I’ll testify to everything,” he told the lead detective. “I have the hard drives in my car.”

I handed the fireproof bag, the red binder, and the USB drive directly to my lawyer.

“It’s all in there,” I said. “Attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy.”

As they dragged Alejandro past us, he stopped and looked at Mateo one last time. There was no apology in his eyes. Only bitter, toxic hatred.

“You are no son of mine,” Alejandro spat.

Mateo looked back at him, slipping his arm around my waist.

“That is the best thing you’ve ever said to me,” Mateo replied.

The officers hauled the Navarro family out into the flashing lights of the police cruisers. For the first time in five years, the mansion was completely, blissfully silent.
