Chapter 1 - The Switch

The ink on the page was still wet.
11:45 p.m. Sofia administered the final dose. Patient’s heart stopped.
It was barely noon. Diego hadn’t even landed yet, but his script was already written. Valeria, the private nurse, sat weeping in the corner of the living room, her face buried in her hands.
“He told me to write it now,” she sobbed. “He said once the chaos started tonight, there wouldn't be time to update the logs.”
I didn't offer her a tissue. I didn't offer her comfort. I turned to my husband.
Mateo was sitting up in the hospital bed, his color slowly returning as the chemical paralytic worked its way out of his system. The third-party physician had flushed his IV with a counter-agent an hour ago.
“Are you strong enough to walk?” I asked him.
Mateo swung his legs over the edge of the mattress. His hands gripped the metal rails. His knuckles turned white, but his bare feet planted firmly on the hardwood floor. He stood up. He was shaking, but the fire in his eyes was blinding.
“I’m strong enough to tear my brother apart,” Mateo rasped.
“No,” I said, handing him a glass of water. “We stick to the plan. We don't just want them bleeding. We want them in federal prison.”
I turned to Valeria. “You are going to wipe your tears. You are going to stand by this bed. And when Diego walks through that door, you are going to tell him everything is ready for tonight.”
Valeria nodded frantically.

I looked at the security camera mounted in the corner. My lawyer’s private tech team had arrived through the service entrance twenty minutes earlier. They had already looped the footage. Anyone checking the live feed would only see me sitting quietly by a comatose Mateo.
The trap was set. Now, we just had to wait for the wolves to arrive.
