Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire

“You fool,” Alejandro whispered, dropping to his knees among the scattered papers. “You’ve ruined us. You’ve ruined the Navarro name!”

“The name was already rotten,” Tomas replied, stepping away from his father and standing beside Mateo.

Isabella was hyperventilating, backing toward the front door. “We have to leave. Alejandro, get up! We have to call the jet!”

“Nobody is calling a jet,” I said, pressing a button on my phone.

Red and blue lights flooded the massive front windows of the estate. The wail of police sirens pierced the night, growing louder by the second.

Alejandro stood up, his eyes wild. He reached inside his tailored jacket and pulled out a silver revolver, aiming it directly at my chest.

“I will not go to a cell,” Alejandro sneered. “I built this city. If I fall, I’m taking your wretched wife with me, Mateo.”

Mateo didn't flinch. He stepped cleanly in front of me, shielding my body with his own.

“Then shoot me, old man,” Mateo challenged, his voice eerily calm. “Do it. Prove you’re the monster I always knew you were.”

Alejandro’s hand shook. The great patriarch, the man who had controlled everyone through fear and manipulation, was suddenly faced with a son who was completely unafraid to die.
