Chapter 3 - The Hostile Takeover

The parents in the room murmured in shocked, panicked tones as Diane's threat echoed off the walls.
Pastor Javier looked completely bewildered, clearly unaware of any property deeds held in her name.
"Diane, the church expansion property was purchased with congregation donations," Pastor Javier argued, trying to maintain his composure.
Diane laughed, a sharp, metallic sound that made my skin crawl.
"I am the treasurer of the building fund, Javier, and I legally transferred the deed into an LLC under my name five years ago," she boasted proudly.
She turned to face the horrified parents, relishing the absolute power she held over their community.
"If anyone here supports this ungrateful woman," Diane said, pointing at me, "I will bulldoze the new youth center and sell the land to commercial developers."
Ryan stepped forward, stepping between his mother and the terrified congregation.
"You are threatening the entire church just because you can't control my wife?" Ryan demanded, his voice thick with disgust.
"I am protecting my legacy!" Diane yelled back, her face twisted in rage.
"I will not let some blonde outsider erase the Rodriguez name from this family or this church!"
She grabbed her designer purse from the craft table and marched toward the doorway.
"You have until tomorrow morning to bring Lily to my house, Ryan, or the bulldozers arrive on Monday," she threatened coldly.
She walked out of the room, her high heels clicking aggressively down the linoleum hallway.
The children's ministry room descended into absolute, terrified chaos.
Parents were frantically asking Pastor Javier what they were going to do about the youth center.
I knelt down and picked up Lily, holding her tightly against my chest.
The heavy, chemical smell of the black dye was still strong, a constant, sickening reminder of Diane's cruelty.
Ryan wrapped his arms around both of us, resting his chin on my shoulder.
"I am so sorry," Ryan whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I had no idea she was this unstable."
"We are not giving her Lily, and we are not letting her destroy this church," I promised him fiercely.
Pastor Javier approached us, looking completely defeated and exhausted.
"I need to call an emergency board meeting," the pastor sighed heavily.
"If she truly holds the deed to that land, the church is going to lose millions of dollars."
I looked at the pastor, my mind racing through the legal knowledge I had gained from my years working in corporate compliance.
"Pastor Javier, did the church board ever formally approve the transfer of that deed to her LLC?" I asked quickly.
The pastor shook his head. "No, we trusted her to handle the financial paperwork, she never mentioned an LLC."
I smiled a cold, determined smile, feeling the power shifting back into my hands.
"Then she didn't secure her legacy, Pastor," I stated confidently.
"She committed massive corporate fraud, and I know exactly how to prove it."
My cell phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket, displaying an unknown local number.

I answered it, and a harsh, raspy male voice spoke immediately.
"If you want to know what Diane really did with the church expansion money, you need to meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Street in twenty minutes."
