Chapter 2 - The Sabotage

The entire room seemed to hold its collective breath as Ryan held up the printed emails.
Diane’s confident facade finally cracked, her eyes widening in genuine panic.
"Ryan, what are you doing? This is a private family matter!" she hissed, taking a step toward him.
"You made it public the second you put chemicals on my daughter’s head," Ryan shot back, refusing to lower the papers.
He turned toward me, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and deep, agonizing shame.
"I didn't just fly home early because of the hair dye," Ryan confessed, his voice tight.
"My boss pulled me into a meeting yesterday afternoon and handed me a printed stack of anonymous complaints."
I felt my stomach drop, sensing that the nightmare was rapidly expanding beyond a toxic grandmother.
"What kind of complaints?" I asked, gripping Lily's hand tighter.
Ryan took a deep breath and looked directly at his mother.
"Someone emailed the corporate HR department claiming I was embezzling company funds to pay for my wife's lavish lifestyle," he revealed.
Gasps rippled through the parents standing in the room.
Brooklyn Bartlett covered her mouth in shock, pulling her own child closer to her side.
"The emails included our home address, my employee ID number, and forged bank statements," Ryan continued.
"They were demanding I be investigated and fired immediately."
Diane scoffed loudly, crossing her arms in a defensive posture.
"And you think I did this?" she mocked, rolling her eyes dramatically.
"I barely know how to use an iPad, let alone forge bank documents!"
Ryan didn't flinch; he simply flipped to the final page of his printed stack.
"The IT department at my company traced the IP address of the sender," Ryan stated coldly.
"The emails were sent from the desktop computer sitting right here in the church's administrative office."
Pastor Javier physically flinched, his eyes darting toward the hallway where the main offices were located.
"Diane," Pastor Javier said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You are the only person with keys to that office on Thursdays."
Diane’s face turned the color of ash, realizing she was entirely cornered.
"I did it to protect you, Ryan!" she suddenly shrieked, tears springing to her eyes.
"She is ruining you! She makes you stay home with the baby instead of working overtime, she isolates you from your culture!"
She pointed a shaking, accusatory finger directly at my chest.
"If you lost your job, you would have to move back into my house, and I could finally raise that child correctly!"
The sheer, unhinged malice of her plan left me completely speechless.
She was willing to destroy her own son’s career just to gain control over my daughter.
Pastor Javier stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Diane’s shoulder.
"Diane, I am placing you on immediate, indefinite administrative leave," he announced loudly.
"You need to gather your personal belongings and leave the premises right now."
Diane ripped her shoulder away from his grasp, her eyes blazing with furious defiance.

"You can't fire me, Javier!" she screamed, completely abandoning her sweet, grandmotherly persona.
"I built this ministry, I hold the deeds to the church expansion property, and if I leave, I am taking it all with me!"
