Chapter 18 - The Unmasking

The four hundred guests screamed in terror, scrambling out of their seats as crystal shards and champagne rained over the nearby tables.
Julian Thorne stopped speaking, his charismatic smile vanishing as he stared down at his bloodied lead counsel groaning among the broken glass.
"Security! Get security to the VIP section immediately!" Thorne shouted into the microphone, his voice cracking with sudden panic.
At that exact moment, Agent Morales initiated the remote override.
The massive sixty-foot presentation screen behind Thorne flickered violently, cutting away from the corporate logo.
In its place, high-definition scans of the red ledgers, offshore banking statements, and wire transfer authorizations bearing Julian Thorne’s verified digital signature filled the screen in twenty-foot letters.
Before the audience could comprehend what they were seeing, the ballroom’s multi-thousand-watt sound system roared to life, broadcasting the private audio recording Diane had made five years ago:
"The congregation is a herd of sheep, Diane... If that idiot contractor Marcus opens his mouth about the foundation cracking, have the boys from the docks pay his family a visit."
The voice boomed through every speaker in the room, reverberating off the crystal chandeliers with horrific clarity.
Reporters from three local television networks immediately turned their cameras away from the podium and aimed their broadcast lenses directly at the giant screens, beaming the evidence to hundreds of thousands of viewers across the state in real time.
Julian Thorne’s face drained of every drop of color. He stepped back from the podium, his hands trembling as he stared at the indisputable proof of his crimes displayed before the entire state elite.
"Turn that off!" Thorne shrieked, losing every shred of his refined composure. "Cut the power! It's a fabrication! It's a lie!"
The grand double doors at the main entrance of the ballroom were thrown open with thunderous force.
Dozens of heavily armed FBI tactical agents and State Police troopers swarmed into the hall, their assault rifles raised, shouting orders that cut through the hysteria of the crowd.
"Federal agents! Nobody move! Stay where you are!" Agent Morales’s voice cut through the room like a blade.
Thorne turned to run toward the backstage green room, but Captain Bartlett and three state troopers stepped through the rear curtain, blocking his path with shotguns raised.
"Julian Thorne," Captain Bartlett announced loudly, his voice echoing across the silent ballroom. "You are under arrest for federal racketeering, grand larceny, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Thorne looked around wildly, searching the crowd of wealthy donors, politicians, and friends he had wined and dined for three decades.
Not a single person looked back at him with sympathy. Every face was frozen in profound horror and disgust.

The state troopers forced the billionaire down onto his knees on the very stage where he was meant to receive his crown. The cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists in front of the flashing lights of twenty television cameras.
The reign of Julian Thorne was over.
